We will have Dr. Merle Loudon talk about “The Origin and Development of Malocclusion” and Dr. Ricky Harrell will present the evolution of temporary anchoring devices which started in the early 2000’s. It promises to be a rewarding meeting to attend.

Merle Loudon

Dr., Dentist

Bio: Dr. Merle Loudon graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1957. For the past 39 years his practice has included Orthodontics and TMDysfunction treatment. His Specialty is temporomandibular pain treatment, headache control, and functional jaw orthopedics and straight wire orthodontics. Associated with his T.M.J. treatment and control of pain is diet, parasite elimination, intestinal cleansing and healing (wellness). Dr. Loudon has written numerous articles in dental journals and has taught advanced courses for dentists in T.M.Dysfunction treatment, orthodontics and related pain control for more than 39 years. In 1972 he was the first dentist in Washington to use straight wire orthodontics. He was the first dentist to correct vertical deficiencies in children by placing vertical dimension-primary molar buildups. Dr. Loudon was involved with the first group of dentist to recognize lateral tongue splinting in young infants and integrate functional and fixed techniques to correct vertical dimension deficiencies and condylar placement. He is the originator of vertical dimension-primary molar buildups, which help to correct deep bites and otitus media in over 1000 children. He invented the Loudon-Chateau anterior repositioning appliance, the functional muscle malocclusion concept the twelve commandments of occlusion and the vertical overbite domino rule. Dr. Loudon has written numerous articles in several American and foreign journals. He has lectured in over 50 cities and 7 foreign counties on functional jaw orthopedics, fixed wire and T.M.Dysfunction treatment. He has been instrument in setting up criteria for teaching in the I.A.O., including the certified instructor program.

Ricky Harrell

Professor of Orthodontics, Medical University of South Carolina

Bio: Dr. Harrell is Professor of Orthodontics at the Medical University of South Carolina. He currently serves as Director, Graduate Program in Orthodontics. Dr. Harrell joined the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics in April 2015. He earned his DMD from the University of Alabama in 1979 and his Orthodontics certificate also from the University of Alabama in 1984. His MA was earned at the University of the Pacific in 2014. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.
