Lean and Agile Middle East (Agile ME) and Heriot-Watt University Dubai (HWUD) are organizing the third annual conference - Lean and Agile Middle East Summit 2017 to be held on March 18th, 2017 at Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Resort in Dubai, UAE.  This is a one-day event with three parallel tracks of talks, interactive workshops and keynote speeches.  We are excited to have world class authors and thought leaders contribute to our discussion. This will include three keynote speakers Dave Snowden, founder Chief Scientific Officer of Cognitive Edge and the founder and Director of the Centre for Applied Complexity at Bangor University in Wales, Hendrik Esser, change force behind the Ericsson's enterprise transition to Lean and Agile, and Dr. Hamdy, the Projects Advisor to the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai Chairman of the Board.

This year we are happy to introduce the academic track where a selected number of applied academic research papers that have been peer-reviewed and accepted by our scientific committee will be presented and discussed.

Amos Haniff

Associate Professor, Heriot-Watt University

Bio: Amos Haniff is Associate Professor of Project Management at Heriot Watt University and Deputy Head of the Department of Business Management within the School of Management and Languages. He teaches project management and strategic project management at postgraduate and executive levels, and delivers training courses in project management and strategic change to public and private sector organizations.  His research interests is on project success and the strategic alignment of projects with organizational strategy. In particular, he has conducted research into the strategic behavior of temporary multi-organizations and project leadership. He has created a portfolio of MSc and Executive MSc programmes in project management, including European funded Erasmus Mundas courses. He is a member of the Court of the University, a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a PRINCE2 Practitioner, and former Scottish representative for the Association of Project Management (APM) Education Network. He is also a frustrated blues guitarist.

Amr Noaman

Co-Founder & Principal Consultant, Agile Academy

Bio: Amr is an agile Coach, Trainer, and Consultant whose life vision is to propagate lean and agile thinking in the Middle East. Amr is an author of several industrial papers and articles, including the 'Process Increments Method' and the famous 'How Kanban Works' article at Infoq. He is also a frequent speaker at international conferences and forums, including the Agile Conference, the PMI Global Congress, and a keynote at AgileAfrica 2013. Amr was one of the drivers of Egypt's GoAgile program, in which he trained 1000+ practitioners, coached many teams from a wide range of private and public organizations. Amr is the co-founder of Agile Academy, which is focused on helping teams and organizations do successful agile transformation and deliver value at their maximum potential. Amr initiated Egypt's Lean & Agile Network, and is the co-organizer of Agile Egypt meetup, one of the largest communities of Agile in the region. Andreas Hägglund

Bio: Andreas Hägglund is co-founder of Swedish ICT Consultancy 11K and Agile Middle East, he is also the General Manager of Parmatur Middle East where he helps companies achieve business agility through arena based organizations. He is a much appreciated speaker on topics like Lean, Agile, Innovation and Management. Andreas is an experienced Agile Change Agent that has been helping companies become more Lean and Agile since 2001. He is a certified Scrum Master and Facilitator as well as a certified Scaled Agile Framework Program Consultant. He combines consulting with teaching classes in Agile and often takes the roles of Scrum Master or Product Owner. He was part of the team that translated the Scrum Guide to Swedish and he is passionate about Continuous Improvements and the Power of Teams. Having a MSc in Business Andreas started out on the Business side only to land his first real job as a developer, thus gaining experience from the entire development value chain. He then slowly found his preferred place of action right at the intersection of Business and IT.

Dave Snowden

Chief Scientific Officer, Cognitive Edge

Bio: Dave Snowden is the founder and chief scientific officer of Cognitive Edge. His work is international in nature and covers government and industry looking at complex issues relating to strategy, organisational decision making and decision making. He has pioneered a science based approach to organisations drawing on anthropology, neuroscience and complex adaptive systems theory. He is a popular and passionate keynote speaker on a range of subjects, and is well known for his pragmatic cynicism and iconoclastic style. He holds visiting Chairs at the Universities of Pretoria and Hong Kong Polytechnic University as well as a visiting fellowship at the University of Warwick. He has also held senior fellowships at the Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies at Nanyang University and the Civil Service College in Singapore. His paper with Boone on Leadership was the cover article for the Harvard Business Review in November 2007 and also won the Academy of Management aware for the best practitioner paper in the same year. He has previously won a special award from the Academy for originality in his work on knowledge management. He is a editorial board member of several academic and practitioner journals in the field of knowledge management and is an Editor in Chief of E:CO. In 2006 he was Director of the EPSRC (UK) research programme on emergence and in 2007 was appointed to an NSF (US) review panel on complexity science research. He previously worked for IBM where he was a Director of the Institution for Knowledge Management and founded the Cynefin Centre for Organisational Complexity; during that period he was selected by IBM as one of six on-demand thinkers for a world wide advertising campaign. Prior to joining IBM he worked as a software designer and programmer building Decision Support Systems for major international clients such as Guinness. As a result of that work he developed the business to the point where he became General Manager of a new software business covering Decision Support, Forecasting and Inventory Management.. In those roles he was a pioneer in bringing academic insight into the pragmatic world of business. He was one of 50 managers selected to be part of the management buyout of Data Sciences from the Thorn EMI group and rose to a central role in strategy before the take over by IBM. In that role he pioneered a new approach to service marketing and was one of the founders of the DSDM consortium which went on to create international standards for rapid application system development and joint application design. He created businesses in the areas of Data Warehousing and Legacy System management through the GENUS program won a series of marketing awards in the UK and was crediting with driving most of Data Science’s revenue growth prior to the IBM takeover. His company Cognitive Edge exists to integrate academic thinking with practice in organisations throughout the world and operates on a network model working with Academics, Government, Commercial Organisations, NGOs and Independent Consultants. He is also the main designer of the SenseMaker® software suite, originally developed in the field of counter terrorism and now being actively deployed in both Government and Industry to handle issues of impact measurement, customer/employee insight, narrative based knowledge management, strategic foresight and risk management.

Dr. Khaled A. Hamdy

Strategic and Project Management Consultant, Roads and Transport Authority

Bio: Dr. Hamdy is a Strategic and Project Management Consultant with 30 years international experience. Before joining the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai as the Projects Advisor to the Chairman of the Board, Dr. Hamdy provided Project Management and Business consulting services to organizations in Canada, Egypt, Oman and UAE covering diverse fields including Government, Construction, Manufacturing and Service Industries. Dr. Hamdy is a Civil Engineer with a complete understanding of the managerial and financial aspects of project management.

Taha Elhag

Associate Professor, Heriot-Watt University

Bio: Dr Taha Elhag is an associate professor in project management at Heriot Watt University. Previously he was an associate professor at UCL, University of London. Before that, he was an assistant professor at Manchester University. His teaching duties comprise undergraduate and postgraduate programmes; and course directorship. Dr. Elhag academic experience also includes the supervision of MSc dissertations and PhD research; and acting as internal and external examiner for different Universities. He is also an expert reviewer for many international journals and government funded research projects. He is an internationally respected academic with a track record of publications. Dr Elhag is regularly invited to join international conference advisory committees. He is the author of over 60 refereed papers in international journals and conferences. He has wide ranging expertise providing project management consultancy and worked as project manager with contracting organisations. He provides accredited professional training for PMI and APM qualifications in the UK, North Africa and Middle East. He also worked with the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) for capacity building and development programmes. Dr Elhag has been developing and delivering bespoke education and professional training interventions for a range of government ministries, private sector and universities.

Hendrik Esser

Vice President, Ericsson

Bio: Growing up in the 1980s, Hendrik was passionate computer game developer and active in a computer club giving programming lessons. After getting his diploma in Electrical engineering he started at Ericsson as a SW developer and grew into technical coordination and System Development roles. A broad interest in people and management of large organizations brought him into management roles, heading Systems- and Technology Management, Testing and Project Office organizations. Today, he heads the Operations staff unit for a very large, internationally distributed SW development organization. In 2008 he was a key contributor to the agile transition of the 2000 people organization he worked in. He supports the Ericsson enterprise transition to lean and agile by consulting and teaming up with other parts of Ericsson. He also is active as a speaker at agile conferences and as the director of the Agile Alliance’s Supporting Agile Adoption initiative.

Husni Roukbi

Karima Hamani

Associate Professor, Heriot-Watt University

Bio: Karima Hamani is an assistant professor in construction management at Heriot-Watt University, Dubai Campus. She has more than 15 years of experience in the construction industry covering project management, sustainability and structural design. Karima Joined Heriot Watt University as adjunct faculty member since 2009 and as full time faculty member in January 2016. Throughout her work in academia, she delivered several construction management courses for postgrad and undergrad students and supervised MSc dissertations in different construction management related research areas. Karima is a PMP, LEED AP and Estidama PQP accredited professional and she holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and an MSc in Construction Project Management. She is currently pursuing her PhD studies in sustainable construction.

Madhur Kathuria

Bio: Dr. Maged Youssef is teaching fashion management in the school of Textiles & Design at Heriot-Watt University. He has more than 20 years’ practical experience in Textiles & Fashion industry as a manager and as a consultant. He implemented many successful development projects for international aid organizations like CIDA, USAID, and GIZ. Dr.Youssef has Studied Textile technology and management at Dresden University of Technology, Germany. His PhD was in the field of Quality Assessment and Business excellence. In the last five years, he was a visiting scholar in many reputable universities such as Heriot-Watt University, UK- North Carolina State University, USA – Karlsruhe University of Applied Science & Dresden University of Technology , Germany- and Helwan University, Egypt.

Coming from a liberal art background, he has a wide experience on leading high-performance teams across the research/design/development spectrum. Matteo combines engineering expertise with the ability to bridge business, creative, and technical perspectives. He uses his insight and experience to help organizations challenge assumptions and discover new solutions. His interests focus on researching better way of foster internal communication and creating effective, rapid feedback loops with users. Mohamed Amr

Bio: Mohamed is an agile coach, trainer and a consultant who’s passionate about inspiring and enabling individuals and organizations to achieve sustainable agility. Mohamed combines around 10 years of experience in software engineering, process improvement and agile software development. As a Principle Consultant at Agile Academy, Mohamed coaches, trains and mentor individuals, teams and organizations in adopting agile. Mohamed has trained more than 800 professionals and coached various teams from small, medium and large companies. Mohamed was a key player in the largest agile adoption initiative in Egypt entitled (GoAgile program), which involved more than 50 different organizations and is considered as one of the key agile thought leaders in Egypt. Mohamed has worked with clients such as Vodafone, ITWorx, ITS, Valeo, Orange, Mantrac and many other clients in Egypt. Mohamed is the co-author of the “Process Increments” method, which is an agile-based method for managing software process improvement projects. Mohamed has also led many agile adoptions in different organizations coupled with other frameworks such as CMMI and Six Sigma during the last 5 years. Mohamed is a Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) and a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (ASQ). Previously Mohamed worked as a process improvement specialist and change agent in IBM. Across a period of 5 years, Mohamed has led various adoption projects of many process improvement frameworks and methods in IBM such as (CMMI, Six Sigma (DMAIC), RUP) and achieved CMMI level 5 with IBM in 2005 to become the 1st company in the Middle East and Africa to achieve this level.

Mohamed Salama

Director of Corporate Executive Relations, Heriot-Watt University

Bio: Mohamed is currently the Director of Corporate Executive Relations and the former Associate Head of the School of Social Sciences (formerly known as Management and Languages), Heriot Watt University, Dubai Campus. In addition, he has been the Programme Director for two Masters Programmes; MSc in Strategic Project Management since 2006 and recently MSc in Operations Management at Dubai Campus. He is currently a member of Dubai Campus Academic Council and the University Quality and standards Committee. Dr. Salama has 30 years of academic and industrial experience in Project Management, Marketing, Strategy and Mergers & Acquisitions. Mohamed has taken senior management posts in Construction Management, Marketing and Mergers & Acquisitions in ME, Italy and UK over the period 1990 – 2002. He completed BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering from Cairo University, an MBA from Edinburgh Business School and a PhD in Construction Management from the School of Built Environment, Heriot Watt University. Mohamed has been delivering training workshops for executives over the past decade in the UK, Middle East, and Denmark. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HE) in Scotland and a member of the Project Management Institute PMI (USA), The Chartered Management Institute (CMI-UK), and The Association of Researchers in Construction Management (ARCOM) in the UK. Mohamed has 15 years of teaching Project Management, operations Management, Strategy, Research Methods and Negotiation in The School of Management, The School of Built Environment and The Business School in Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh. Rasmus Runberg

Bio: Rasmus Runberg have worked with Agile development for more than 5 years, and is a certified SCRUM Product Owner and LeSS Practitioner. He has worked with agile organisations to streamline their processes as well implementing new and improved methods. Rasmus have a background as an IPMA certified project manager, and for many years he worked with classic project management methods, in both small business and large corporations. This has given him a full spectrum view of the project methodologies being used, from waterfall, to agile implementation.
