Description

SQL  (Structured Query Language) Class 1

SQL is one of the basic tools for data analysis in the world and the language - which is straightforward and easy to learn - can be found in many other software packages. It has been used for decades for major investigations using large datasets and is a powerful way to join information contained in multiple datasets. When you’ve done all you can with spreadsheets but either your data are too big or you need to join tables (files), SQL (Structured Query Language) is for you.

We will get you started on the basic commands of this powerful relational database tool, including SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, ORDER BY and joining tables. SQL is especially useful for large, complex projects. You don’t need any coding experience, but prior spreadsheet work is preferred.

In this first SQL class, we will cover the basic use of SQL to filter data and summarize data.

We will be using DB Browser SQLite which can be downloaded from https://sqlitebrowser.org/ for both PCs and Macs. Our conference laptops will be PCs. There will be 20 of those in the classroom and spots for 10 students using their own laptops.

SQL (Structured Query Language) Class 2

In the second class, we will focus on joining tables (files) using a common field (column).

We will be using DB Browser SQLite which can be downloaded from https://sqlitebrowser.org/ for both PCs and Macs. Our conference laptops will be PCs. There will be 20 of those in the classroom and spots for 10 students using their own laptops.

SQL (Structured Query Language) Class 3

The third class will build on skills from the first two classes: we'll be using the relational power of SQL by joining tables for a deeper data analysis for reporting.

We will be using DB Browser SQLite which can be downloaded from https://sqlitebrowser.org/ for both PCs and Macs. Our conference laptops will be PCs. There will be 20 of those in the classroom and spots for 10 students using their own laptops.

Important Advisory: Hands-on classes are limited to 30 seats. Please sign up only if you are serious about taking the class. Signing up does not ensure you will get in. The first 20 attendees will get in and be able to use the conference laptops, which are PCs pre-loaded with software and data. The next 10 attendees will need their own laptops and software noted in the course description. If you see online that a class already has 30 sign-ups do not hesitate to still sign up, as seats often open up. We will try to repeat popular classes later in the conference. Thanks for your understanding.
