Description

More and more often journalists get not only documents, but also software, code or devices leaked. But how to investigate code? What security precautions do you need to take when analyzing a spyware app? How can I crack encrypted code? And what can the software actually tell me?

In this workshop, Vanessa Wormer and Felix Ebert from the Süddeutsche Zeitung together with the computer security researcher Thorsten Holz from the Ruhr University Bochum explain, based on their story on a Chinese surveillance app, how software can be evaluated and what journalistic conclusions can be drawn from it. The participants get to know the basics of Reverse Engineering and learn how to set up an investigation based on code.
