How to Do Hard Stories on Soft Issues
9:00 am - 10:15 am
K4, Der Spiegel

Speakers

Description

Corrupt politicians, security issues, economic fraud: These are traditional issues for investigative journalists to work on – but there are a lot more topics to cover if you think about investigations as a force for good in people's daily lives.

Some topics that people struggle with are sometimes seen as soft: the fight for equal rights for the LGBTQ community, racism, sexual abuse or mobbing (bullying) in the workplace, as well as conditions in nursing homes or occupational diseases.

To dig into this issues, reporters sometimes need a different skillset: to build evidence without a traditional paper trail, to open-up traumatized sources, to build trust in communities that are not used to dealing with the media.

The speakers will present examples how to turn up hard evidence on what are often preceived as softer issues, how to think differently about topics you could cover – and how to convice your editors to let you do more of them.
