Description

Many data-driven investigations start with a simple question and a tight deadline. Simply hacking something together, thus is tempting. However, things are rarely as simple as they first seem. Questions get refined, data needs processing and many collaborators need to be kept up to date. Without a proper structure, you’re doomed at this point.

Over time, we at Der Spiegel have developed a structure that allows us to keep all of our analysis in one place, protects raw data from being modified, preserves attribution, includes brief documentation and is language-agnostic. We work with Jupyter or R-Notebooks and share our results in real-time with non-ddj experienced reporters in-house via google sheets, shared Excel documents, hosted in a OneDrive-Cloud or rendered HTML Notebooks.

In this session we’ll present the project template that is at the core of our work, we’ll go through a couple of examples and will thus demonstrate how to include all the necessary data wizardry into the workflow, while easily and constantly communicating results with ordinary reporters.
