Description

In the recent years, and even more so during the covid-19 pandemic, digital storytelling has become an important element of user interaction in GLAM institutions. At the University of Göttingen a new campus museum, the "Forum Wissen", is scheduled to open within the next year, drawing on more than 70 collections throughout the faculties, as well as the library holdings of an enlightenment-founded university embarked into the digital age. The richness of objects from academic heritage, ranging from art, botany and chemistry to rare books and zoology, is currently being digitized. Their images are published within the IIIF-framework, to be made easily accessible for research, teaching and outreach, and releasing them into the collaborative IIIF-realm of worldwide knowledge institutions. Thus, creating a tool for in depth knowledge transfer, to be used by scholars and students as well as curators, was an almost obvious task.

The IIIF framework is an excellent basis to create complex digital stories integrating content from multiple institutions. The new IIIF storytelling solution StrollView makes it easy to pick images of cultural heritage objects from arbitrary IIIF repositories worldwide and combine them into entertaining and educative presentations. The resulting interactive stories, called strolls, can be embedded into Wordpress or any other existing website. The strolls can also be presented as stand-alone applications on desktops and mobile devices or even on interactive terminals in museums and exhibitions. The StrollView editor allows curators to create, edit and share individual presentations based on the huge variety of digital content provided by the IIIF supporting institutions. StrollView was developed in a joint effort of the Centre for Collection Development at the University of Göttingen and seige.digital GbR in Leipzig. All components of StrollView are feely available as Open Source Software.
