Medical Oncologist, Professor of Oncology, Karmanos Cancer Institute

Michael S. Simon, M.D., MPH, professor in the Department of Hematology & Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine, is the leader of the Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team and medical director of the Cancer Genetic Counseling Program at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Dr. Simon has expertise in breast cancer and cancer genetics. His primary research interests include the relationship between cardiometabolic risk factors and outcomes after cancer; the effects of statins on markers of breast cancer proliferation and apoptosis; and racial and ethnic differences in hereditary cancer risk and genetic test results, using 20 years of data from Karmanos’ clinical genetics data base. Dr. Simon has been actively involved as an investigator in several large clinical and population-based studies encompassing cohort, case-control and randomized controlled trials. He has served as co-investigator of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) in Detroit since 1993 and has been the principal investigator for the Detroit site since 2008 and chair of the WHI’s Cancer Special Interest Group since 2017. He has also served as co-investigator on the Cancer and Reproductive Experience (CARE) case-control study. He is currently co-investigator on the National Institute of Health funded Infrastructure grant, “Detroit Research on Cancer Survivorship (ROCS)” which is the only NCI funded grant evaluating survivorship issues specific to African American cancer survivors. Dr. Simon is board certified by the American Board of Medical Oncology. He is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, The American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG).
