Description

People with developmental disabilities may have challenges that make it difficult to achieve daily activities, including maintaining their oral health. The National Center for Biotechnology Information found in 2012 that adults with intellectual disabilities struggle to find quality oral health care and said that 32 percent of patients had untreated cavities while 80 percent had severe gum disease. Dr. Timothy Garvey has specialized in working with people with disabilities for over 30 years and will share his insight about the skills to meet the oral health needs of people with developmental disabilities.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand barriers people with disabilities face in receiving dental treatment
  • Describe creative ways used to treat patients with disabilities successfully
  • Communicate strategies to teach new dentists how to treat people with disabilities
