Freek Bomhof
senior consultant, TNO
Freek joined TNO in 2003 and has had several positions there in various application domains, having worked on redesigning business processes for large organizations, and innovation management primarily for SMEs. He has been coordinating the TNO research on Big Data a number of years and he is now a senior Consultant and Project Manager at the Data Science department. He has set up, contributed to and coordinated a number of EU R&I projects. Currently Freek is focusing on applications of AI in safety and security, for instance in the H2020 TITANIUM project. He also leads a large internal Integration Flagship project within TNO on Trustworthy AI. His main interest is the interplay between technology, and ELSE (ethical, legal, social, economic) aspects, leading him to put emphasis on explainable AI and related issues; a topic that he also works on in his role as taskforce lead in the Big Data Value Association.

Description
AI technology connects increasing amounts of data and becomes more and more interconnected with other digital systems. To unlock its economic potential and use it to the benefit of our society however, people need to trust AI-based systems and applications. Trust in this context comprises different perspectives, like compliance to data protection rules and policies as well as ethical values and standards, or that an AI system reliably behaves correctly even in highly complex or rare situations. Accordingly, this track will present different activities and projects on the national and European level which deal with this fundamental aspect of trust in AI, and discuss some promising approaches to achieve it, ranging from standardization and certification to research topics like explainability and integrity by design.

Lots of specific approaches exist to design and implement responsible AI systems. Integration is a challenge. The session aims to give a taste of how the different concepts could be put together.
The objective is to stimulate the debate on how ‘responsible AI’ should be put in practice. What does it mean and which topics need to be taken into account? What is the outlook?
In the session, TNO presents how their ‘integration flagship’ projects are approached from the perspective of multidisciplinary applied research. We try to bring together state of the art insights for trustworthiness and responsibility and have taken our first steps in the roadmap towards optimal human machine collaboration. We present a maturity roadmap and want to discuss how we think how co-learning (human and machine) could be shaped.

This session is for all those who have built the Big Data community of the Big Data Value Association and the Big Data Value Public Privare Partnership during these years. Before entering into a new adventure, let’s share the best memories and experiences: EBDVF 2020 is the perfect moment to tell how the BDVA/PPP made a difference in our life, in research, in the big data environment, in Europe. EBDVF is opening the floor to all community members who want to share their personal experience and thoughts about the value of the work done in the BDVA and the PPP. A call for volunteer speakers will be launched very soon: stay tuned so you can have your say!
