Elli Kartsakli

Senior Researcher, BSC

I'm Elli Kartsakli, a senior research engineer in the wireless telecommunications sector. I hold a Ph.D. in Wireless Telecommunications from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Spain . Since December 2019, I am a senior researcher in the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS). I am part of the Computer Sciences - Predictable Parallel Computing group, working on scheduling policies and distributed architectures for edge computing environments. I have significant experience in Horizon 2020/FP7 European projects and I am currently involved in ELASTIC and CLASS projects, coordinated by BSC. My primary research interests include edge computing and distributed architectures, network slicing, protocols and architectures for 5G networks and beyond.

Description

In this session, we present a novel software ecosystem, developed within the European-funded project ELASTIC, capable of exploiting the distributed computing capabilities of the compute continuum of the smart city, while guaranteeing additional properties, known as non-functional requirements of the system: the real-time, energy, communication quality and security. We further discuss how this design will be adopted and tested in a real-life mobility use case aiming to improve safety, efficiency and maintenance of the transportation network in the city of Florence.

The objectives of this session are to:
  • Present next-generation urban mobility applications for tramway solutions and their potential benefits for all involved stakeholders (public sector, transport operators, citizens, etc.)
  • Discuss the design of an extreme-scale analytics platform over a heterogeneous and distributed computing infrastructure for both data-in-motion and data-at-rest analytics
  • Present the ELASTIC solution, bringing together the edge and cloud paradigms into a unified software ecosystem that fully exploits the compute continuum
Agenda of the session:
  • Eduardo Quiñones (ELASTIC project coordinator, BSC): Overview of the ELASTIC project and the concept of elasticity (15 min)
  • Jürgen Assfalg (ICT Manager, Città Metropolitana di Firenze): Smart mobility use case in the city of Florence (10 min)
  • Anna Queralt (Senior Researcher, BSC): Distributed data platforms for extreme analytics (10 min)
  • Elli Kartsakli (Senior researcher, BSC): A novel software architecture for analytics workload distribution whilst fulfilling real-time, energy, communication and secure properties (10 min)
  •  Q&A time (15 min)
