Data Marketplaces are the main vehicles driving EU society and industry “Towards a European Data Sharing Space” (see BDVA position paper). According to this report “Data Marketplaces are built on Data Spaces and Data Platforms where data is commercialized using Open Data, Monetized Data and Trusted Data sharing mechanisms”. Interpreting it with the lenses of manufacturing industry, this means that Data Marketplaces rely on B2B trusted Data Spaces based on Data Sovereignty, on top of which to implement a Data Sharing Platform supporting different business models, from Open Data, to Monetized Data, to Closed Data Exchange networks. An extremely important competitive advantage for EU Manufacturing Industry with respect to low-wages Countries is the possibility to implement Product-Service-Systems (PSS) where advanced (in many cases AI driven) services are wrapping high-quality products, allowing customization, personalization and in one word servitisation of the business. Large companies e.g. in the Machine Tools, Aeronautics, Automotive, Shipbuilding domains since years have understood the competitive advantage of servitising their long-lasting products, but have implemented a Data/Service network on proprietary closed solutions, this way preventing SMEs from fully exploiting the opportunities offered by PSSs.
In the recent years open Data Models (for assets, materials and products), open Data Spaces architectures and reference implementations and open Data Platforms have been developed in several projects and initiatives, this way unleashing also to SMEs the possibility of joining B2B equipment Marketplaces based on Data and Services provided under Data Sovereignty principles.
It is vital for the competitiveness of EU Manufacturing Industry (and SMEs in particular) to provide open, standard and interoperable digital Marketplaces where they can sell their high-quality products accompanied by advanced added value services and enabled by open and common Data Spaces. Some projects in the NMBP-20-2018 call “A digital 'plug and produce' online equipment platform for manufacturing” as well in the EU Materials Modelling Council have implemented interesting advancement towards a common Equipment & Materials Marketplace based on Open Data Spaces and Semantic Models.
The session aims at presenting results and discussing future perspectives among different projects and initiatives towards a common EU Data and Service Marketplace for the Manufacturing Industry.
