Cathal McCabe

Xilinx University Program, Xilinx

Cathal McCabe is a senior engineer in the Xilinx CTO department, where he manages the Xilinx University Program in EMEA. As part of this role he delivers training workshops for academics on the latest Xilinx tools and technologies. Most recently he has been working on the PYNQ project – a Python-based open-source productivity environment for Xilinx platforms. He is also responsible for academic and industrial partnerships, and special initiatives in the region. Before joining Xilinx, Cathal worked for the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in the UK, where he was the Europractice manager for FPGA, Embedded, and ESL design tools and flows and responsible for training on related topics.

Abstract: From desktop, to cloud, data center and HPC, the rate of computing performance scaling is decelerating as a result of the slowdown of Moore's law, and the effects of Dennard scaling and Amdahl’s law. In the last few years there has been strong interest in FPGAs in cloud, data centre, HPC, and enterprise systems and applications.
This panel session will bring together academic experts to discuss the future of FPGAs in high end computing systems and applications, and the challenges ahead.
  • What are the short-term opportunities for FPGAs in the data centre, and what does the future hold?
  • How do FPGAs and development tools need to evolve to meet the demands of high end computing users and system providers?
  • What challenges need to addressed by the FPGA research community?

The Xilinx University Program has been supporting teaching and research activities at thousands of universities around the world for over 25 years. This talk will give an update on the latest Xilinx software tools, hardware and resources available for educators and researchers. This will include a review of the latest Alveo data center acceleration cards, libraries, and programming options.

The talk will also introduce the Xilinx Adaptive Compute Cluster (XACC) research program. The XACC program is a special initiative to support novel research in adaptive compute acceleration for high performance computing (HPC). The program is open to researchers around the world working in relevant areas. Details on the program, opportunities, and how to apply will be covered.
