Last November, Der Spiegel and public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) published a joint investigation on how Germany’s leading credit scoring company Schufa rates the creditworthiness of German citizens. Earlier reporting on the topic was forced to rely merely on anecdotal evidence, but the data teams of both newsrooms were able to analyze more than 2000 credit reports from consumers that had been collected by two German non-profit companies.
This panel explains how the crowdsourced sample of confidential credit reports was used to shed light on the covert and privately-owned scoring algorithm. The workshop will give insights into algorithmic accountability reporting and working with private consumer data, reflecting on obstacles and difficulties as well as learnings for similar future stories.
