Bill Hankes is founder of a data journalism site Sqoop that helps reporters search and set alerts for public records, starting with the Securities and Exchange Commissions, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the Department of Justice and the federal court system. Sqoop, which launched in April 2015, is used in nearly every newsroom in the U.S., and many abroad. Hankes has spoken at the SABEW Government Data Immersion Workshop in Washington, D.C., for four years running, the NICAR conference in Denver, and at the Investigative Reporters and Editors conference in Philadelphia where Sqoop was debuted. He is a member of SPJ, SABEW and Hacks and Hackers.<br><br> Before Sqoop, Hankes was a communications executive for 20 years, most recently serving as director of Bing public relations at Microsoft, and vice president of corporate communications at RealNetworks. He started his career as a journalist and financial writer.
