Indra de Lanerolle is the director of the Journalism and Media Lab (jamlab.africa) in Johannesburg, Africa’s first journalism and media accelerator and innovation lab. He is a visiting researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg where he conducts internet research and teaches digital media theory and television journalism. He also teaches one of the only University level courses in journalism and media entrepreneurship. He has published research on government and civil society use of technologies in accountability, on the ‘internet of the poor’ and mobile Internet use and on media innovation in Africa. He also regularly contributes to public and policy debates on internet and tech policy. He is currently working on research on the digital public sphere. He started his career as a journalist, television and film producer working in Europe and Africa. His work has been recognised with a Peabody Award, an Emmy nomination and the Japan Governor’s Prize.
