Authors: Chuck SaccoThe purpose of this case is to describe how team development challenges nearly killed a promising university-student startup. As first-time founders with mainly technical backgrounds, the team encountered numerous founder and personnel challenges that severely impacted the startup during its formative days. Working in a major university-based startup incubator, the team hid their challenges from the incubation staff and mentoring teams who may have been able to help them. This case study describes the team’s early progress, their organizational structure and decision-making approaches, along with a review of their key challenges and risks at each stage in their early existence.
