Medical Director, Harborview Medical Center Respiratory Care Department and Medical Program Director for rural Jefferson County EMS Having begun his career in medicine as an EMT, Dr. Carlbom has always kept his keen interest in teaching prehospital providers how to initiate critical care on patients long before the patient arrives in an ICU. He serves through leadership as Medical Director, Harborview Medical Center Respiratory Care Department and as Medical Program Director for rural Jefferson County EMS. He cares for patients as teacher & coach to physicians-in-training working as Attending Physician in the Medical and Trauma-Surgical Intensive Care Units at Harborview Medical Center.Having begun his career in medicine as an EMT, Dr. Carlbom has always kept his keen interest in teaching prehospital providers how to initiate critical care on patients long before the patient arrives in an ICU. He is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine and trained in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado and in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Washington. He returned to fellowship after 5 years of Emergency Department Attending obtaining specialty training in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine with clinical research in knowledge translation in sepsis. Board certification followed in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine. His passion is in early recognition and early resuscitation of critical ill patients, and designed and led the implementation of a unique electronic sepsis warning system that integrates computerized data and provider judgement to improve sepsis outcomes at Harborview Medical Center. He is a regional expert on sepsis and post-resuscitation care and has publications in airway education, sepsis, and therapeutic hypothermia. He is recognized as a clinical & educational leader across the region. In 2020, he was awarded the individual Global Sepsis Award in recognition for his passion to educate others about sepsis.
