Description

Michael is a seasoned science and medical communicator with 40-plus years of expertise in public affairs, journalism and broadcast media. He joined Johns Hopkins Medicine as senior media relations representative in March 2019. Michael came to Hopkins after 27 years at the federal National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), serving there from 1991-2007 as director of media relations and for the next 11 years as senior communications officer. Prior to NIST, Michael worked as a newspaper reporter, a medical TV writer/producer, an NPR features reporter, an ABC-TV news producer, a corporate AV production manager and media officer, and press officer/science writer at the National Cancer Institute. He also has been an award-winning freelance writer/editor for nearly 40 years, primarily on medical and science topics. Michael is a member of NASW and the DC Science Writers Association. He serves as DCSWA President for 2024-2025. In NASW, he served from 2012-2021 as co-chair of the PIO Committee, has helped plan 13 SciWri conferences as a member of the Programs Committee, and received the 2013 Diane McGurgan Award.
