Michele Riggs joined Wellstar Health System in 2000. During her tenure, she worked at Cobb and Kennestone hospitals; first as a Board-Certified Lactation Consultant and then in 2005, as manager of Maternal Infant Support Services for both locations. In 2008, Michele re-aligned as manager of Maternal Infant Support for Wellstar Kennestone hospital, leading numerous efforts to improve breastfeeding quality outcomes including a successful Baby Friendly Hospital Designation in 2017, the establishment of a milk depot which has provided over 50,000 ounces of milk to banks, and the implementation of human donor milk for alternative supplementation. Michele is credited for her work in establishing employee pumping stations across the system. She designed a breastfeeding center and maintained a pump rental depot with more than 75 breast pumps. Michele initiated and executed a postpartum support group and Lactation outpatient setting at the Acworth Health Park. Michele currently serves as the Director of Women’s Health Patient Education and Support Services at Wellstar Health System providing oversite for the standardization of women’s education including the new Wellstar Doula program, perinatal education classes and support groups, pre and postnatal patient collateral for Wellstar Medical Group, and overseeing lactation and bereavement processes. Michele completed her Bachelor of Arts in Communicative Disorders and Sciences at Wichita State University and obtained a Master of Science in Health Care Administration from New England University. She maintains an IBCLC certification in Lactation. Michele has 4 grown daughters and 7 grandchildren and resides in the metro Atlanta area.
