The first question is whether this is the post-HES era. If we agree it is, (I may not agree) then what are the alternatives? Do colloids really make a difference? Is context critical to fluid choice? If the patient is hypovolemic and the glycocalyx is likely to be in good health are colloids a rational choice? Does the inevitable extra salt and water really matter if you only use crystalloids?
