In 1998, Congress created the Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) to provide a scientific basis and rationale for implementing fuels management activities with a focus on activities that would lead to development and application of tools for managers. JFSP’s mission and influence has broadened significantly since its inception. I will discuss the evolution of JFSP and the influence the program has had on both the fire management and the research communities over the past 19 years. I will also address the key components that have made JFSP a successful program, past and present challenges, and the value and impact of the JFSP to science and management.
