Due to rising sea levels and interest in climate change, Kiribati has become a hotbed for researchers from around the globe. The plight of the i-Kiribati through the lens of foreign researchers and media is often featured in international press accompanied by heartbreaking photographs of environmental disaster. In all of the popularity, however, the i-Kiribati voice has remained silent. This presentation looks at the fundamental barriers to local empowerment in research and discusses potential remedies.
