Understanding the Experience of International Faculty in U.S. Higher Education: Exposing and Redressing Microaggressions
3:50 PM - 5:05 PM
Thu Oct 19, 2017
Bay Room

This session aims to bring together scholars, practitioners, and educators interested in issues of microaggression, internationalization, and academic work. The purpose of this session is to expand participants’ understanding and awareness of what microaggressions are, how they manifest in academic spaces, what material consequences occur for people who experience microaggressions, and how to improve communication by becoming conscious of microaggressive communication patterns. Specifically, this session focuses on the ways in which international faculty (of color) become targets for microaggressions and how they navigate problematic interactions. We also offer advice and recommendations from empirical data from 26 female immigrant faculty members.
