Mechanical Project Engineer
Diamond Light Source
Are you looking for a change and want to help tackle some of the big issues challenging us today?
Reducing the cost of the next generation of batteries?
Better diagnosis for brain cancer?
Supporting research around COVID-19?

As an Engineer at Diamond you could have a critical role working with leading scientists to tackle some of these big issues.

About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Engineering at Diamond enables our scientists to use synchrotron light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.

At Diamond we are currently planning a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.

About the Role
We now have an opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Project Engineer to join our team, developing state of the art facilities to deliver ground-breaking scientific research.

This role will work on the development of beamlines, many of which are supporting research in life science including work directly related to COVID-19.

You will play a critical role in working collaboratively with scientists, technicians and other engineers.

This position will also make a significant contribution to the Diamond-II upgrade.

Diamond Light Source

Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.

About the Role

We now have several opportunities for talented Electrical Design Engineers to join our Engineering team to provide electrical engineering design support to the technical systems of the Diamond facility, and to contribute to the Diamond-II upgrade project.

The Engineering team plays a key role in the design, development and construction of the Accelerators and Beamlines that generate and transport light to the scientific samples.

The role is responsible for:

Working with internal and external scientific and engineering colleagues to produce electrical systems designs for a variety of projects including precision positioning controls for optical systems, vacuum control systems, machinery controls, safety circuits and LV systems.
Developing and applying expertise in technologies such as programmable logic controllers, motion controls, distributed I/O, instrumentation and pneumatic controls.
Use of electrical CAD software and AutoCAD to produce schematics, hook-ups and other electrical design documentation.

Maintaining and updating engineering drawings and documentation on projects.
Power Supplies Engineer / Senior Power Supplies Engineer
Diamond Light Source
The Power Supplies group is responsible for over 1300 high precision and high stability power supplies used to power the electromagnets on Diamond’s accelerators. These electromagnets bend and focus the electron beam as it travels around the accelerators. The power supplies are some of the most precise and stable power supplies in the world, ranging between 5A at 20v up to 1000A at 2000V. These are typically using MOSFET and IGBT switching technology. Whilst a majority of the power supplies are DC with long term current stability of 50ppm, there are also 5Hz AC cycling power supplies rated up to 2MVA, and also pulsed power supplies with instantaneous power ratings up to 7.5MW.

Diamond is planning a multi-million pound upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II, which will generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy. As part of this upgrade many new power supplies will be required to further enhance the performance of the accelerator, and we now have an opportunity for an experienced Power Supplies Engineer or Senior Power Supplies Engineer to assist with the design, procurement and testing of these new power supplies, as well as the day-to-day challenges of operating high performance magnet power supplies.

Further responsibilities will include:

Providing technical knowledge and practical experience of switched mode power supplies.
Producing concept designs, layouts, assembly drawings and detailed manufacturing drawings employing AutoCAD and Cadence Design Suite software.
Applying knowledge of circuit simulation techniques.
Maintaining and updating engineering drawings and documentation on projects.
Assisting in / creation of detailed power supply technical specifications.
Testing and characterising prototype power supplies.

Applying knowledge of structural, precision engineering and thermal design where required to design reliable products.
Using hand calculations and finite element analysis, in order to verify engineering designs.
Working closely with internal and external scientific and engineering staff to produce mechanical designs for projects.
Preparation of technical information in support of procurement activities.
Contributing to hazard analysis and risk assessment exercises.
Maintaining and updating engineering drawings and documentations on projects.
This position will also make a significant contribution to the Diamond-II upgrade.

SESAME is a third generation light source facility, with an electron beam energy of 2.5 GeV. Its mission is to promote international collaboration in the Middle East and neighboring countries using synchrotron light for basic and applied research. Three beamlines (XAFS/XRF, IR and MS) are currently in operation and open to external users. A fourth and fifth beamline (for X-ray tomography and soft X-ray spectroscopy) are under construction and are expected to come into operation in 2022. We are hiring an experimental data engineer to be associated with the Data Collection and Analysis team of the Scientific Sector at SESAME.
The responsibilities of the candidate will be:
• To design, develop, implement and maintain software for the beamlines data acquisition systems.
• To establish procedures and workflows for experimental data collection and experiment automation.
• The tasks will range from high level instrument programming and scripting of experimental workflows managing high data rates to data processing and visualization.
