Environmental Scientist Aquatic (Environmental Specialist 3)
Washoe Environmental Protection Department (WEPD)
Environment: Lake Tahoe is at the heart of the ancestral homeland of the Washoe Tribe where they have existed for millennia. From Tahoe, the Washoe homeland extends to the N to Honey Lake, to the S to Yosemite National Park, to the E to the Pine Nut Range, and to the W to the upper elevations of the Sierra Nevada. Important streams include Long Valley Creek, Truckee River, Carson River, West Walker River and headwaters of Middle Fork of Feather, Yuba, American, Tuolumne and Mokelumne Rivers. WEPD works on multiple water-related environmental projects for the Tribe. ʔímgiʔ or Lahontan cutthroat trout is an important cultural resource to the Tribe. WEPD plays a key role in the recovery of ʔímgiʔ which includes addressing threats like aquatic invasive species, mine waste impacts (two Superfund sites in the Carson River system), and barriers to fish migration. The lead aquatic scientist will: 1) plan and implement monitoring and restoration/recovery activities throughout the Washoe homeland; 2) train and supervise WEPD field crews in aquatic science techniques; 3) review publications, permit applications and environmental assessments related to aquatic resources and share findings with Tribal staff and leadership; 4) coordinate activities with cooperating agencies and partner organizations to magnify impacts of WEPD’s efforts to improve conditions for aquatic resources; and 5) complete tasks supporting WEPD aquatic resource programming such as outreach events and reporting progress to grantors or cooperating agencies.
