Director of Outdoor Education
Riverdale Country School
Riverdale seeks an experienced, enthusiastic Director of Outdoor Education. Responsibilities include:

Building outdoor leadership capacities and outdoor education experiences for students in the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools;
Leading outdoor leadership program for Upper School;
Serving as the lead for trip management, including planning trips and creating emergency action plans, managing risk and medical forms, securing necessary permits and coordinating with vendors where appropriate;
Recruiting, training, and managing faculty leaders in leading effective outdoor education and leadership experiences;
Following Riverdale’s established risk management protocols and working with Director of Experiential Education to ensure current best practices;
Working with Director of Experiential Education and Deans of Students to develop new gradewide experiences and improve already existing ones, including outdoor center retreats and outdoor adventure and leadership experiences;
Liaising between all three divisions and helping to create special programming utilizing the outdoors that will seek to support student life and faculty and staff professional development;
Maintaining budgets, managing all outdoor equipment and equipment loans;
Supporting faculty to create meaningful curricular tie-ins between academic courses and outdoor education;
Teaching one section in one’s academic discipline;
Being available to lead weekend, vacation, and summer trips. Because of the nature of the workload, the successful candidate’s work schedule will be adjusted accordingly so that they have time off that roughly is in accordance with other faculty members.

The position will report to the Director of Experiential Education. A wilderness first responder certification and Bachelor's degree are required. Successful applicants will have significant experience leading outdoor adventure trips in the backcountry and in developing successful outdoor education and leadership curriculum.

The Haile-Manas Academy (HMA) will be a world-class private co-educational secondary boarding school for 400 students of promise recruited from across Ethiopia. The pioneer class of 100 9th graders will arrive on a newly constructed campus in September 2020, in the town of Debre Birhan, just under 2 hours from the capital of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

We seek dynamic and inspirational educators for this once-in-a-lifetime chance to help create and develop a premier school for Ethiopia’s most promising and motivated students, a school that will serve as a model for the country. Our faculty will be ​mission-driven Ethiopian and western educators who are motivated to model how individuals from different backgrounds form a community to collaboratively design solutions to a wide variety of concrete challenges. In this start-up phase, faculty and students will be especially empowered to create the systems and structures for the s​chool community, inspired by their passions and aligned with the mission of the school.

Academic Responsibilities
● Teach 3 sections of a course that meets 6 hours a week, including Saturday morning (all
courses taught in English)
● Design and deliver an inquiry-based, constructive curriculum consistent with Ethiopian national standards in collaboration with a partner teacher
● Share best practices or provide professional development for high school educators
across Ethiopia

Co-Curricular Responsibilities
● Design and implement a meaningful co-curricular offering (two of the three trimesters:
community outreach, coaching, or club)
● Develop student leadership in co-curricular offerings

Residential Responsibilities
● Advise approximately 8 students academically and socially-emotionally and contact for advisee families
● Be part of a team designs and supervises community experiences on
weekends (Saturday afternoon and Sunday) approximately two times a month

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated use of a variety of teaching methods to support different learning styles and have experience teaching the whole spectrum of courses from algebra through advanced calculus and/or statistics. The candidate will need to understand the conceptual links between mathematical subjects. Complementing these skills should be a desire to teach students who encompass a range of academic abilities and an excitement about helping students build self-confidence through successful exploration and discovery. In order to do so, this candidate should have experience with experiential learning through hands-on tasks, projects, and guided reflection.  Candidates should also be well-versed in current technology to support mathematical learning, including, but not limited to, online tools, software applications, smartboards, and graphing calculators.
