PRIMARY FUNCTION

Applies expertise in bioinformatics to support capability expansion projects and bioforensic casework execution within the National Bioforensic Analysis Center (NBFAC) Genomics group.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Requires a PhD (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or a relevant computational discipline with experience in bioinformatics, and a minimum of 2 years related experience; may include post-doctoral experience.
• Familiarity with 2nd- and 3rd-generation sequencing platforms (e.g., Illumina, Pacific Biosciences, Oxford Nanopore Technologies) and associated data types.
• Knowledge in one or more of the following specializations: data visualization, statistical analysis, predictive modeling, genome assembly, long-read technologies, deep learning/machine learning, microbial genomics, human genomics, synthetic biology/genetic engineering/CRISPR/etc.
• Expertise operating in a UNIX/Linux environment.
• Experience with multiple programming languages required for small- and large-scale software development and scripting (e.g., Bash, Perl, Python, Java, R, C/C++).
• Familiarity with computing clusters and associated job management software (e.g. SGE).
• Well-versed with bioinformatic software solutions and concepts of data examination.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Must be a citizen of the United States, able to obtain and maintain an interim secret clearance leading to a top secret clearance, suitability for DHS, a favorable adjudication of the Department of Justice (DoJ) for select agent access, and enrollment in the Personnel Reliability Program (PRP).
