PhD and Postdoc Positions on the Interplay Between Business Process Management and Data Science
RWTH Aachen University
The Process and Data Science (PADS) group is continuously looking for bright PhDs and Postdocs that want to do cutting-edge research in process mining.

The scope of PADS includes all topics where discrete processes are analyzed, reengineered, and/or supported in a data-driven manner (www.pads.rwth-aachen.de). The main focus is on Process Mining (including process discovery, conformance checking, performance analysis, predictive analytics, operational support, and process improvement). This is combined with neighboring disciplines such as operations research, algorithms, discrete event simulation, business process management, and workflow automation. The ambition is to realize scientific breakthroughs, which will help organizations to turn event data into business and societal value.

The PADS group works on the whole spectrum ranging from theoretical research to applied research, also within the context of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology (FIT) and the Cluster of Excellence Internet of Production (IoP).

RWTH Aachen University is one of the leading technical universities in Germany (typically ranked in top-3). It is one of the so-called Universities of Excellence, and the Department of Computer Science at RWTH is one of the strongest in Europe with over 30 professors.

Appointments are 100% and based on the federal wage agreement (Tarifvertrag der Länder or TV-L, see http://oeffentlicher-dienst.info/tv-l/). The salaries are very high compared to most other countries, but applicants are expected to be self-propelling, autonomous, and function as employees (rather than students).

See www.pads.rwth-aachen.de for more information on the group. Please send your application (including a motivation letter and full CV) via e-mail to applications@pads.rwth-aachen.de, and you will be asked to fill out a form. If you have questions, please also use the e-mail address applications@pads.rwth-aachen.de or call +49 241 80 21901.

Research Associate in Formal Modelling and Explainable AI for Health and Care
University of Edinburgh
The ACRC programme led by the University of Edinburgh has been established to research and develop innovative solutions for the care of people in later life, contributing to tackling the global challenge of promoting and maintaining ’healthy ageing’. Central to the ACRC approach is a commitment to working in partnership with people in later life, their families and communities, and to creating a sustainable UK wide collaboration to ensure excellence and impact.

In order to allow for meaningful inference and decision making in the context of advanced care delivery for the older person, explainable computer-based models are needed that can capture the vast body of knowledge both around general and specific care pathways and incorporate data from real-time sources such as sensors. In the case of the person in later life, there is a need for contextualisation when it comes to both the care recipient and their environment.

One objective of this project is to build computer-based models that enable both the management and analysis of care, while supporting decision making via Explainable AI methods. Workflow management systems will be used to automate parts of care delivery, so that we can maintain consistent, accountable and continuous levels over time. AI-based workflow analytics and other techniques will be used to understand and predict outcomes based on sensor, video and recorded care data (coming from other streams of the New Technologies of Care Programme and the broader ACRC). Bridging the gap between the high complexity of the care landscape, the individual needs and circumstances of the older person, and the development of computer-based workflows that interface between data and processes in order to drive decision-making will be one of the important goals of this multidisciplinary project.
