Job description The improvement of light use efficiency by plants is potentially a game-changer for boosting photosynthetic yields in the field. ... ;The focus of the PhD project is on studying the effect of tuning the absorption properties of the plants with the aim of improving photosynthetic performances. In the project we will use a combination of spectroscopic and biochemical methods to analyse the effect of changes in the pigment composition of plants using natural variations, but also ad hoc produced mutants. The goal is to identify a strategy that permits better light absorption in a canopy avoiding negative pleiotropic effects, e.g. a reduction of the efficiency in which light energy is used for photochemistry. The research will be conducted at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, under the supervision of prof. dr. Roberta Croce
Requirements We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a master or equivalent degree in chemistry, physics, biology or related field, with a strong interest in spectroscopy and in multidisciplinary research. Candidates should have excellent analytical skills and be able to communicate in English both verbally and in writing.

The project will be developed in close collaboration with groups from different national and international institutions. The project will be carried out at the Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC-CSIC) in Barcelona. The MCS group is headed by Dr Amadeu Llebaria and it is focused on basic and applied research aimed to obtain biologically active compounds and their application in therapy through the development of drugs, working in all areas of Medicinal Chemistry. MCS group also includes a section of molecular pharmacology led by Dr. Xavier Rovira. Current main research includes Photopharmacology, and Protein labelling REQUIREMENTS • The candidate must have finished his/her PhD on Pharmacology, Biotechnology, Biomedicine, Biology fields or similar. • The candidate should have an excellent background in Molecular pharmacology, Molecular biology and Cell biology. • The candidate must be highly motivated, have a good knowledge of English and excellent communication and personal skills. CONDITIONS Full-time 48-month contract according collective agreement of the Spanish National Scientific Council (CSIC).
