Student Intern - Part-time - Hawaii Birds
San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research
PRIMARY PURPOSE
The San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research is seeking a Student Intern to join our efforts to save endangered birds from extinction in Hawai‘i. This Student Intern opportunity will provide an exciting and unique learning experience for students currently enrolled in an accredited college program. The Student Intern will work alongside and learn from staff members and collaborators on Hawai‘i Island in a professional work environment. These teams conduct conservation breeding, reintroductions, and associated activities for endangered Hawaiian birds.

This is an exciting opportunity for students who are passionate about caring for and stewarding the land. This position will be based at a remote field site and/or the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center, both near or in Volcano, on Hawaii Island. Qualifications include: current enrollment in an accredited college program, excitement to learn skills and gain experiences to help save Hawaiian birds from extinction, and at least 18 years of age with a valid/current driver license and in good standing with the DMV. Selected candidate must be able to identify diverse colored identification tags on birds.

Spotted Owl Research Assistant

Two assistants needed March 31 to Aug 28 for a long-term population ecology study of the Northern Spotted Owl in northwest CA. Assist primarily in monitoring, banding, and assessing reproduction of northern spotted owls and barred owls. Must be physically fit, able to hike in steep terrain, work as part of a crew and independently, work at night off trail, have excellent hearing, and able to identify birds by color band.

One position will act as a senior crew member for a 2 person crew; previous experience with spotted owl surveys required, experience with capturing and banding is ideal.

Applicants must have a BS (or in progress) in wildlife or related field.
