Position Description
Responsible for the daily care of animals; provides appropriate food and water; grooms, bathes, and exercises animals; monitors the behavior and health of animals; reports health, behavior or temperament issues to supervisor; and performs general housekeeping of shelter.

Typical Duties
Assists shelter patrons, animal control officers and outreach staff with animal handling, intake, and evaluation, which often includes transferring and relocating animals to and from personal and department vehicles, cages and kennel runs; completes intake and care reports; maintains daily log sheets and inventories; and other record-keeping as required.
Assists with medical treatments as directed, including euthanasia of animals. Assists patrons and staff with disease prevention and reduction efforts.
Performs routine keyboard/computer operations on standard office equipment.
Responds to patron inquiries related to animal health and related programs; provides education pamphlets or materials.
Supports and participates in departmental response to disaster and emergency events.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
High school diploma required.

Requires 1-2 years of professional animal care or animal control experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Licensure
Must be a Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician (CAET), or obtain certification within six months of hire. NOTICE: State regulations prohibit anyone with a criminal conviction of any kind from obtaining CAET.
Valid driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and maintenance of valid personal vehicle insurance as required by Tennessee Law.

Vaccinations
Must receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations

Animal Control Officer

Position Description
Patrols assigned area within Nashville-Davidson County in assigned vehicle; performs animal control services, including responding to calls for assistance, rescuing animals, apprehending stray animals, and investigating animal-related violations of local or state law.

Typical Duties
Apprehends subdues, and impounds stray, unlicensed, vicious, feral, and sick animals; investigates allegations of animal cruelty and other complaints involving animals.

Enforces animal control laws and ordinances, issues citations, collects evidence, and prepares investigative reports; communicates with other law enforcement agencies (MNPD/DCSO), works with prosecuting attorneys, and testifies in court.
Performs routine keyboard/computer operations on standard office equipment; completes intake and care reports; maintains daily log sheets and inventories; and other record keeping as required.
May conduct or assist with outreach and liaison programs, addressing groups and organizations on animal control, cold/hot weather pet safety and other issues.

Spay Memphis is an established nonprofit HQHV spay/neuter clinic, providing affordable surgeries in our mission to prevent pet overpopulation and reduce shelter euthanasia rates. Since opening in 2005, Spay
Memphis has performed over 67,000 surgeries. In 2020 alone, we provided over 7,000 surgeries. Currently open four days a week (Tuesday - Friday), our clinic is equipped with three fully outfitted surgical stations and a fully-trained staff.

Job Requirements:

• Must have or be eligible to obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine in Tennessee

• Experience with HQHVSN surgery a plus but willingness to learn and perform HQHVSN surgical techniques required
• Provide a high quality of care to all patients
• Willingness to perform sterilization surgery on pediatric/juvenile, cryptorchid, in heat, and pregnant animals
• Ability to restrain and humanely handle animals, including difficult to handle and potentially dangerous animals using Fear Free techniques

The ideal candidate would be comfortable performing 30-35 HQHV sterilizations (mixed canine/feline, male/female) per day. All experience levels (including new graduates) will be considered. Training with the staff supervising veterinarian prior to start will be required. Currently, we are looking for a start date at the end of August but can be negotiable.
