The successful candidate will serve as Director of the McQuinn Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and, based on qualifications, be eligible for a tenured professorship in the College’s Division of Applied Social Sciences (DASS). The position supports teaching and research relating to entrepreneurship, leadership, strategy, and related disciplines. This is a nine-month appointment. Unlike traditional entrepreneurship programs designed for a general business education, the McQuinn Chair’s position within CAFNR lends itself to a natural emphasis on entrepreneurship in life sciences, food and agriculture, rural development, and natural resource entrepreneurship. When created in 2004, the McQuinn Chair was designed to enhance research, classroom teaching, and one-on-one mentoring in entrepreneurial leadership, with a specific charge to enhance the life sciences economic engine in the State of Missouri and to help raise MU’s national reputation as promoter of innovation in this emerging field. This includes the pursuit of innovative and non-conventional visions, the parameters and requirements of risk-taking, and personal conduct and priorities. The scope of the chair is not only with the creation, management, and growth of new firms and organizations but also with the operation of existing enterprises, the adaptation of technological and organizational innovations, and the management of human resources.

The Agricultural & Applied Economics Dept along with an interdisciplinary team of researchers with expertise in applied economics and remote sensing led by Dr. Elinor Benami, based in Blacksburg, VA, is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Research Associate in the Fall 2023. The position is renewable up to three years.

As part of our NASA Harvest activities, our team is investigating the correspondence of remotely sensed indicators to realized losses of policyholders in a variety of agricultural insurance programs across the globe. The position requires evaluating variation in observable agro-environmental conditions as well as on-the-ground data related to yields and livelihoods. The candidate will be responsible for supporting the research efforts of our team using a variety of tools and methods. These will include preparing geospatial and administrative data for analysis, applying theory-guided statistical approaches to uncover relationships in the data, generating visualizations and maps, preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, and presenting findings to academic as well as practitioner audiences.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to use their expertise in geospatial and economic analysis to assess the potential and limits of remotely sensed technologies to enhance the value of agricultural insurance to the public as well as policyholders. We anticipate occasional travel to visit relevant local partners as well as domestic and international collaborators for training and advancing the research program.

The ideal candidate will have an MS or PhD with relevant work experience in a relevant quantitative field, e.g., remote sensing, earth system sciences, computational social sciences, or agricultural economics/risk management, and a strong background in geospatial analysis & economic modeling.
