Supervisor, Cetaceans
John G. Shedd Aquarium
The Cetacean Supervisor, Oceanarium supports the Cetacean manager in the day-to-day management of the Oceanarium department with a focus on the Cetacean area of operation. This position works closely with the other cetacean supervisors and the manager to ensure effective daily operations of the team and care for the animals. As needed, they work with the Director, Oceanarium - along with numerous other departments including Animal Care, Animal Health, Environmental Quality, Facilities, and Aquarium - to help ensure smooth and effective operations involving the animas under their care. This position works cooperatively with the animal care management teams to ensure compliance with all accreditation and regulatory requirements for departmental operations and provides full support of the aquarium’s SCUBA diving program as directed by the Dive Program Manager.

The Supervisor must work collaboratively with the other supervisors in their shared area of focus to help staff achieve goals set out by the manager that support Shedd’s institutional priorities. The supervisor spends most of their time working with the animals and the staff, helping to provide consistent guidance, accountability, and support. They can assess employee’s strengths and support those areas needing growth.

The Supervisor serves in a leadership position in the Animals division and works to implement strategies to meet institutional objectives and initiatives requiring support of the Oceanarium department. Serves as an aquarium spokesperson as needed.

The intern will gain hands-on experience in food preparation, husbandry, enrichment, guest engagement, animal welfare and behavioral observation, and training animals using operant conditioning. This internship will involve animal interpretation with guests and learning the training philosophies for free-contact animal ambassadors.

The Downtown Aquarium in Denver is home to a large variety of taxa! Where else can you get hands-on experience protected contact training a Sumatran tiger, while also hanging out with some three-banded armadillos during a meet and greet? Our program animals include; sloth, porcupine, serval, binturong, North American river otters, three-banded armadillos, and various small animals. It will also include learning training philosophies for the husbandry needs of our exhibit animals. Our exhibit animals include river otters, tigers, and a variety of bird species.

Interns are required to complete a semester long project, chosen with the assistance of staff. Interns work closely with trainers, alone in animal exhibits and alongside dangerous animals therefore, the applicant will need to show maturity and be able to follow directions.

Based upon performance, interns have the ability to advance through our multi-tiered program where they will be given more responsibility and the opportunity to continue growing beyond the basics of animal husbandry.

Senior Behavioral Husbandry Trainer
National Aquarium
Coordinates the implementation, and oversight of formalized behavioral husbandry programs for the Animal Care and Welfare (ACW) staff and animals. Responsible for the standardization of training and enrichment programs across all sections of ACW. Responsible for continual advancement of animal training and enrichment programs as the zoo and aquarium industry evolves. Trains and coaches ACW staff on behavioral husbandry principles and application. Works with direct supervisor, ACW area managers, and other National Aquarium departments to develop behavior-based programs and demonstrations that highlight natural behaviors while ensuring optimal animal welfare Responsible for the daily care of animals as assigned.

Animal Care Associate, Mammals and Birds

The Animal Care Associate (ACA) works in the Aquatheater Show area and the Sea Cliffs Exhibit’s Marine Mammal and Penguin areas. This individual provides all elements of basic animal care including but not limited to food preparation, cleaning kitchen and animal areas, feeding the animals, and maintaining basic animal training behaviors with California Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, California Sea otters, and African Penguins.

Encounter Host

The Animal Encounter Host is the representative of the New York Aquarium/ The Wildlife Conservation Society who interacts directly with the participants of the programs. This individual is responsible for the safety of the animals, the safety of the participants, and for all entertainment and educational aspects of the program.

Responsibilities
The Host prepares the program elements each day, responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Checking in paid participants
• Ensuring all elements in the program are in place and ready to be used in the programs
• Interacting with the Trainer that will be working with the animal that will perform in the program
• Take photograph of encounter sessions
• Adhering to all WCS/NYA/Animal Department policies.

Mammalogist I or II

Join a team doing dynamic and advanced training with unique species! This position participates in husbandry, training, and research with Steller sea lions, harbor seals, spotted seals, and ringed seals, as well as guest engagement. This position will also assist in rehabilitation cases as needed.

The Alaska SeaLife Center is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums

This is a full-time benefited position.

Minimum 1 year training and husbandry experience with marine mammals required.

Seasonal Animal Care Specialist - Marine Mammals

This position is responsible for the handling, training, and care of the marine mammal collection at the Alaska SeaLife Center. This position supports all daily operations and advances in operant conditioning while supporting area research objectives.

This position is seasonal, 40 hours per week, from May 1 to August 30, 2023.

Qualified applicants should have 6 months of marine mammal husbandry and care experience including knowledge of operant conditioning. Applicants 6 possess the ability to swim, see and hear; move about; stoop, kneel and crouch; climb ladders, use arms and hands; handle objects, tools and controls; and sit. Ability to lift and move 50 pounds. Ability to work with and around large, wild animals.
