Anchorage Youth Court Anchorage Youth Court (AYC) is a diversionary program for youth in grades 7 through 12 who are accused of breaking the law to be judged by their peers. Local youth take on the ro... les of attorneys, judges, bailiffs, clerks, and jurors during the trials. Anchorage Youth Court members develop and apply an understanding of the law through legal education, Anchorage Youth Court Bar Association membership, and actual participation in AYC court hearings. AYC is a highly beneficial program because defendants are afforded a chance, in a court hearing by trained local youth, to resolve their legal problems without receiving a formal juvenile record, and the community receives valuable work service as redress for the wrongs committed.
We are hiring a part- or full-time Legal Advisor to support youth in our program. Duties include: • Advise AYC judges, prosecuting and defense attorneys. • Review and screen case referrals weekly for acceptance as needed. • Draft charging documents for each case and prepare attorneys. • Draft and send out victim impact statements as appropriate. • Schedule cases. Prepare scheduling letter, attachments and envelope, and mail packet to defendant. Record in database date that scheduling letter was sent. • Ensure that case files are copied, kept confidential and properly disposed of. facilitate • Prepare and oversee the operations of the pre-teen court program, including training student participants, and coordinating pre-teen court cases and activities with volunteer and case coordinators. • Reserve courtrooms and schedule court system bailiffs. • Attend sentencing hearings or arrange for volunteer legal advisor to attend. Organize youth court basic legal education classes. Oversee curriculum development and accuracy. Contact teacher prospects, help with scheduling and securing classrooms.
Qualifications: Law degree and current license to practice law in Alaska, experience working with adolescents and strong computer skills preferred.
