Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director of Student Services and Advising provides counseling and outreach services to a diverse population of students to enhance their personal, professional, and academic success, ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality student support.

The Director will be responsible for the following:

Counseling students on course selection and degree requirements, bar requirements, long-range academic plans and goals, as well as non-academic factors affecting academic performance.

Providing support and guidance to students in crisis, collaborating with staff and faculty at the Law School and University on complicated/sensitive situations, and working with university departments like Cornell Police and Cornell Health, among other offices, to help resolve issues.

Assisting students with securing approval for disability accommodations, leaves of absence, and terms away from the Law School’s Ithaca campus.

Advising students on character and fitness evaluations and issues related to bar qualification.

Directing Orientation and Convocation programming, as well as other signature student focused events.

This role also serves as a liaison to other administrative offices within the Law School and throughout the University.

Assistant Director of Student Affairs

Collaborates with and provides support to other senior administrators at the law school,

Works with the Director of Student Affairs to develop and organize 1L Orientation program and graduation and award/recognition ceremonies.

Supervises, coordinates, advises, and promotes student organizations, including law school student government. Assists student organizations in establishing appropriate governance structures and in complying with all law school and university requirements.

Coordinates and supervises student disability services at the law school, including communicating to students regarding disability issues. Arranges for classroom and exam accommodations.

Coordinating student counseling and intervention efforts. Assists students seeking university services, including financial aid and other matters.

Assist with the review and evaluation of relevant school of law policies. Recommends policy changes as appropriate.

Supports the law school’s efforts to attract and serve a diverse student body and to promote an inclusive environment.
Supervises and coordinates the work of any assigned personnel.

Manages and maintains student information appropriately and confidentiality.
Performs any other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs, or the Dean.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s degree required, J.D. or equivalent degree preferred, from an accredited law school. Two to four years of relevant experience, related to higher education or law school administration, with preference given to applicants who have experience working in law student affairs.

Berkeley Law Student Services provides a wide range of support for the law school’s student populations, which includes over 1200 JD, JSP, JSD, and LLM students. Students are encouraged to come to Student Services to discuss academic plans, questions about the profession, personal concerns, and summer planning. The office includes the Dean of Students, the Senior Director of Student Services, the Assistant Director for Student Services, Accessible Education, the Exams Administrator and the Student Services Administrator. The office works as a team to support student life at Berkeley Law, including meeting with students one-on-one and coordinating large student events.

This position involves a wide range of student services duties and responsibilities for UC Berkeley School of Law. The Director of Inclusion and Wellness provides assistance to students in academic advising, and personal counseling, student orientation and events, career counseling, and related programs. The role will also provide counseling and advice to targeted students and provide referrals to organization and community resources. The Director of Inclusion and Wellness will create and provide programming designed to improve the quality of students’ experience, with a specific focus on equity and inclusion; work in collaboration with other units to cultivate and enhance inclusion in the Law School community; hold regular meetings with the Affinity Group leaders; take the lead on wellness programming for students, including Mindful Mondays and Mental Health Awareness week; and provide academic and personal counseling services to the general law student population.
