Minmum qualifications for provisional appointment:
Open Competitive: four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional or technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education AND one year of experience teaching about or interpreting the natural world.
Substitution: Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental education, environmental interpretation, environmental science, natural history, natural sciences, or a closely related field may substitute for four years of the general experience.

• Provide on-site oversight and guidance at a specific DEC Environmental Education Residential Camp during the summer while ensuring that all camp procedures and protocols are followed.
• Recruit camp staff at career fairs, colleges and schools during the fall and winter.
• Work with regional Operations staff to ensure camps are safe and functioning before staff and campers arrive.
• Review camp educational materials and mentoring counselors on interpretation techniques and working with children.
• Partner with organizations whose audiences are traditionally underserved and marginalized through activities providing outdoor education and recreation for potential campership recipients.
• Work with non-profit organizations, local municipalities, and state agencies identifying community environmental education needs and developing outreach plans to address these areas.
• Coordinate with local communities highlighting the camp program as a local resource and incorporating local professionals as camp guest speakers
• Organize and lead programs that focus on stewardship of natural resources thereby reconnecting people to the natural world.
• Represent DEC at appropriate venues and events hosted by community organizations and local municipalities.

The Nebraska Forest Service (NFS) provides technical and financial assistance to clients across Nebraska emphasizing rural forestry, community forestry, forest fuels reduction, forest health, forest products utilization and fire protection. Our mission is to enrich the lives of Nebraska’s citizens by protecting, restoring and utilizing Nebraska’s tree and forest resources.
NFS is seeking enthusiastic, qualified applicants to join our team of dedicated staff working towards improving the health, resiliency and sustainability of Nebraska’s trees and forests. By providing forest health programming, the Forest Health Specialist will play a key role in improving the health and resiliency of both rural and community forest resources.

Program Focus Area:
The Forest Health Specialist will provide forest health programming across Nebraska. This position will provide technical assistance and information to agency staff, partners, landowners and homeowners related to identification and management of common insect and disease pests of trees, as well as invasive pests and abiotic issues. The position will develop and coordinate forest health training and workshops, develop education and outreach materials, and collaborate with other forestry staff and partners. The position will conduct tree pest surveys and develop and implement other forest health activities. Some overnight travel is necessary. Position is based in Scottsbluff, NE, or another mutually agreed upon location.

Coordinator - Wildland Fire Training

*Develop and deliver comprehensive educational programs for and provide technical information to forest landowners, natural resource professionals, and others
*Work with other agencies, businesses, and organizations to facilitate the expansion and enhancement of forestry in the assigned geographic area
*Plan, conduct & coordinate workshops, conferences, seminars, short courses, etc. as needed for forestry audiences
*Establish and utilize a programmatic advisory council
*Serve as an expert resource and point of contact related to forest management
*Work independently with little supervision, while simultaneously being connected with the program team, campus specialists, and county offices being served
*Work in cooperation with campus faculty and staff to integrate research and extension
*Travel within the assigned area is required, including some overnight travel
*The candidate must possess a high degree of subject matter competency in the relevant specialization and stay current on new and trending developments within their specialization
*Candidate must also be a self-starter and self-directed, have a commitment to fulfilling responsibility
*Evaluation of area-wide programs and reporting of those results will be required
*Seek external funding to support Extension programming
