University of Illinois Urbana Champaign Postdoctoral Research Associate opening:
Self-healing / Force Responsive Polymers
The Sottos research group in the Department of Materials Science and the Bec... kman Institute has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate in the areas of self-healing and force responsive polymers and will involve extensive characterization with a focus of understanding how different molecular architectures influence mechanical response. The position is for one year, expected to be renewed annually for up to a total duration of three years.
The research is highly inter-disciplinary, and the candidate should demonstrate the ability to collaborate with other researchers from complementary areas including polymer chemistry, materials science, mechanics of materials and numerical modeling.
Competitive candidates should have knowledge and experience in at least two of the three following areas: - Mechanical behavior of polymers (experimental) - Digital image correlation (DIC) or photomechanics - Polymer characterization
To apply, please send a cover letter that summarizes your experience and goals in this field, a full CV, one representative publication, and the names and email addresses of three recommendation letter writers to sottosgroup@illinois.edu.
Candidates must have a PhD in engineering (materials science, chemical, mechanical or aerospace) with relevant experience.
Ideal start date is 8/15/2023, but applications will continue to be reviewed until the position is filled. The start date is negotiable.

Post-doc Fellowship Opportunity at FDA
U.S. Food and Drug Administration Advancing the Credibility of Medical Device Computational Solid Mechanics Modeling using Full-Field Validation Measurements
Summary A post-doctor... al fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL), Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Silver Spring, Maryland. Medical device premarket submissions to FDA commonly rely on computational solid mechanics predictions as part of durability and mechanical performance assessment. Unfortunately, direct measurement of local device mechanics has historically been difficult or impossible due to the complex geometry and small spatial scale of medical implants. This project will lead FDA efforts to develop best practices and benchmark datasets for full-field digital image correlation (DIC) measurements that stakeholders can use to support medical device development activities and facilitate model credibility evidence generation for regulatory submissions.
Desired Qualifications
Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials science, engineering mechanics, or a related field
Background in computational and experimental solid mechanics
Experience designing and performing experiments using full-field measurement techniques at macro- and microscale
Experience preparing and documenting technical content for conference presentations and journal publications
Familiarity with Python for data and image analysis
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Authorization to work in the US
If interested, send CV or resume to email address provided for Dr. Kenneth Aycock.
