Superintendent of Urban Forestry
City of Winter Park General Purpose
Performs care and maintenance of the City’s urban forest for the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. Implement the Urban Forest Management Plan... , oversee programs and projects related to Urban Forestry, and coordinate maintenance performed by in house and contractors. Work performed under minimal supervision with considerable latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Position relies on expertise and experience to interpret and apply established policies and procedures. Work reviewed through discussion, observation of results achieved and review of written reports.
Examples of Essential Functions
Implement the Urban Forest Management Plan.
Coordinate work schedules of contractors and in house staff to perform routine maintenance. Oversee private tree removal inspection process, dead tree removal and hazardous mitigation of trees on City right of ways, overhead electric line clearance, and street/traffic clearance to include lifting the canopy and line of sight clearance for traffic devices.
Assist in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive tree inventory.
Assist in preparing and monitoring the division’s annual budget.
Manage employees assigned to the division, including recommendations for hiring, discipline and termination, performance management, scheduling, and oversight of division workload.
Knowledge, skills & abilities
Knowledge of tree species, tree insects, tree biological functions and diseases. Knowledge of proper techniques for tree removal, maintenance, care, and planting. Knowledge of ordinances and policies relating to trees.
Ability to judge weights and distances; ability to interpret blueprints and maps.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor degree in Forestry, Urban Forestry, Natural Resource Management or a related field supplemented by a minimum of three years’ experience in urban forestry of which one year must have been at a supervisory level.
