To some extent, you’ll be selling the *idea* of buying compute on a trading platform. It’s never been true before that you could buy compute and then sell it back, so companies have had to roughly guess how much compute they’ll need over the next few years and buy that much. Another benefit is that companies can buy very large clusters for short periods of time—days or weeks—which lets them scale to large training runs much more capital efficiently. The central research question investigated in this project is: Can we leverage AI to decode elephant communication from large-scale data? Elephants are a socially and spatially flexible species and sound is a crucial mode of communication. Although it is known that elephant calls convey biologically significant information, the diversity of their calls make it difficult to decode and interpret their communication pattern. AI offers potential to analyze communication patterns that can be used to generate novel hypotheses about the biological function of acoustical signals, and may ultimately aid in the design of controlled experiments to verify these hypotheses via synthesized signals. Within this project, biologists, application-oriented mathematicians, and experts in machine learning will closely collaborate.

PhD position in AI for neurosurgery and medical imaging

scoliosis is a spinal deformity often with no identifiable etiology, sometimes requiring corrective surgery. This surgery may involve the implantation of pre-bent rods anchored by... screws into the vertebrae to straighten the spine. About 30% of patients subsequently develop a complication called "proximal junctional kyphosis" (PJK), a kyphosis developing at the upper end of the rod. PJK may require surgical revision and cause aesthetic or functional issues. Currently, conventional statistical methods do not reliably predict this preoperative risk. The ability to predict this risk would allow for adjusting the discussion with the patient and possibly modifying the surgery (e.g., changing the number of screws or the rod correction angle). Using data from 200 patients operated on in our center with follow-ups over several years, we have identified variables of interest that can feed an AI model. This model could predict the occurrence of this complication from preoperative variables. Creating a reliable predictive model would help better understand and improve the outcomes of this surgery. Developing this model requires skills in machine learning, in particular in CNN to extract relevant features from preoperative MRIs.
