New Haven Museum The New Haven Museum seeks an innovative, enthusiastic professional with demonstrated experience in museum collections management and access. This professional will have the visio... n and capacity to rethink and define the Museum’s collections and role in the twenty-first century. This position is a member of the Museum’s senior management team. The NHM is a vibrant center for exploring the people, places, events, and ideas that define the Elm City and the surrounding region. Founded in 1862, the Museum’s collections date to the early years of New Haven and include more than 10,000 decorative and fine art objects, an extensive photographic archive (150,000+ prints, negatives, film), and the holdings of the Whitney Library, exceeding 30,000 volumes and 350 manuscripts. The position oversees all aspects of the management, preservation, exhibition, and conservation of museum collections, including the integration of collections operations, collections policies and procedures, collections documentation, and monitoring of museum collections’ environmental conditions. The position is responsible for planning and implementing digital outreach projects, including online exhibitions, access to online collections, and media projects. The position co-leads exhibit planning and development with the Director of Learning and Engagement. The New Haven Museum is embarking on a multi-site Master Planning process. This includes infrastructure upgrades, housing expanded staff, planning for new collections storage, and meeting emerging programmatic needs. This Director will play a major role in this process. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities • BA/BS in history, art history, museum studies/management, non-profit management or equivalent. MA preferred. • Minimum 3-5 years successful leadership of historical society/house/site, museum, or similar. Enthusiasm for local history & eager to learn Castine’s role in local, regional, state, & national history. • Demonstrated leadership, visioning, & management skills. • Successful track record of leading & inspiring staff & volunteers & working with a Board. • Strong fundraising skills. Experience with &/or management of capital campaign desirable. • Outstanding communication skills. • Experience in development, implementation, & evaluation of exhibits & programs.
