Principal Safety Engineer (Rail)

The Role:

As part of our UK Safety Team you will be provided with opportunities to undertake safety engineering activities, leading tasks and managing projects.

Key responsibilities:

Take the lead technical role in a range of future signaling, control, rail operations, infrastructure, electrification, software, human factors, and rolling stock related projects

Define and analyse safety and reliability requirements; carry out design safety and reliability analysis

Undertake hazard identification and analysis, and maintain hazard logs

Create safety arguments and safety cases and communicate relevant information on risk issues to relevant stakeholders

Implement a common and auditable approach in the identification of Safety and RAM requirements, their implementation and the demonstration of compliance

Advise clients on current best practice, including relevant legislation, standards (e.g. CENELEC 50126/50128/50129 and IEC 61508 etc.) and guidelines

Keep up to date with current best practice in risk assessment and risk management (e.g. European developments on Common Safety Methods)

Provide support in new business development activities, including identifying potential business opportunities and contributing to proposals.

Research Assocciate - Autonomous Shipping

The Maritime Safety Research Centre (MSRC) of Excellence seeks to employ a full-time Research Associate to participate in the on-going EU-funded Horizon2020 research project AUTOSHIP (Autonomous Shipping Initiative for European Waters), which aims at “Developing and demonstrating to TRL 7 or above two fully autonomous vessels for Short Ship Shipping and Inland Water Ways services” and will lead to step changes in the way autonomous shipping is currently perceived. As a Research Associate, you will play a key role in this project as part of a team, working under the general supervision of more senior colleagues.

To be considered for the role, you should have a PhD (or be close to completion of a PhD) in autonomous marine systems modelling and analysis or a relevant subject and an MSc/MEng degree (or equivalent) in Maritime Technology/Engineering or a relevant subject. You should have a sufficient knowledge of methods employed for modelling, analysis, design and operation of autonomous shipping systems and to be familiar with advanced marine/ships systems (power generation, propulsion, navigation, shore infrastructure, etc.). You should have knowledge of programming languages and models development skills either through work experience or from previous research. You will conduct literature reviews, develop methods, models/frameworks and perform simulation runs to support the design of autonomous ships as well as employ methods to perform environmental, cost, and supply chain analyses.
