Great Lakes Educator
Inland Seas Education Association
The Great Lakes Educator delivers education programming on shore and aboard the schooners Inland Seas, Utopia, and Alliance, under the leadership of the Education Coordinator. Programs are primarily based out of Suttons Bay, MI, but also include various ports throughout the Great Lakes region during the summer. The GL Educator supports development of ISEA programming, completes tasks that support the education activities of ISEA, and participates in ship operations as needed.

Ship's Cook

Inland Seas Education Association is looking for someone with a positive attitude to fill the position of Ship’s Cook for the 2023 season aboard the schooners Alliance and Inland Seas. The cook is required to manage the galley and plan and prepare healthy meals for 5–45 people. This is a full-time seasonal position, from the end of April through September 2023. Seasonal Educator Deckhand
Inland Seas Education Association
Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) seeks an enthusiastic, hard-working individual to join our team as a Seasonal Educator Deckhand. This position is responsible for delivering educational programming and serving as a crew member aboard the traditionally rigged tall ship schooner, Inland Seas. This position requires participation in a DOT-approved drug testing program.
The 2023 season will include delivering day-sails and overnight programs around the
Grand Traverse Bay region of northern Lake Michigan, the Straits of Mackinac, Detroit, MI, and Chicago, IL.

Primary Responsibilities:
Educator
Deliver educational units to student, family, and community groups that emphasize hands-on learning and relate to Great Lakes topics.
Lead group lessons during overnight programs, including science, sailing, and team-building activities.
Provide support to education programming, including but not limited to: maintenance of program equipment, lead program activities, and develop new activities for overnight programs.

Deckhand & Ship Operations
Train to fill the role of crew member aboard Inland Seas.
Participate in a pre-employment and random drug test program as required by the United States Coast Guard.
Learn assigned emergency response duties.
Assist in directing passengers in a safe manner aboard the ship.
Understand and comply with the ship’s rules, policies, and Standing Orders.
Assist with cleaning, maintenance, and repairs as needed.

Term:
May – mid-August (4 months).

Compensation:
A stipend of up to $7,200 is available.
Sea Service documentation is available for those interested in continuing in the professional maritime industry.

Room & Board:
On-site, shared dormitory housing is reserved and available for non-local candidates at our Suttons Bay campus.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy Ernestina-Morrissey
Job Description:
We are seeking a Ship’s Cook for Ernestina-Morrissey. The ship will be sailing to the Gulf Coast in March for three tall ship events. Then returning to New England for the rest of the sailing season. Doing a mix of educational sails, deck tours, public day sails and other port events throughout New England. The galley is completely new with all new equipment. The galley is equipped with separate built-in freezer, refrigerator, 6 burner industrial propane stove with large oven. Room for full sheet pans on three racks. All stainless steel countertops. This galley meets FDA requirements. The Cook will be responsible for three meals a day and home made snacks for ship’s crew of 10 to 13 and up to 22 trainees when they are aboard the vessel for programs. Because this is a new galley the cook will need to set up the galley and put together a wish list of equipment and other galley items needed. This position is also the Hygiene Officer. The ship’s cook is in charge of food safety and hygiene of the ship. Some of the key responsibilities but not limited to are: to ensure that food is handled in a safe manner, wholesome, meets the crews dietary needs, correctly labeled and stored. Also the cook oversees the crew and trainees that the vessel is cleaned daily to a high standard. The cook is not expected to do much of the cleaning, just to make sure that it is being done thoroughly to the prescribed procedures and logged.

Rozalia Project invites applications for a seasonal. full-time position of First Mate with cooking experience. Rozalia Project is a non-profit organization working to clean and protect the ocean and conserve a healthy, thriving marine ecosystem. Rozalia Project leads expeditions aboard our 60’ Sailing Oceanographic Sailing Vessel, American Promise. Based out of Mamaroneck, NY this winter, Kittery, Maine in the summer, our Expeditions are a combination of marine debris cleanups, solutions based science research and education. Schooner Adventure
The SCHOONER ADVENTURE is the Flagship of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and one of the last operating Essex-built fishing schooners on the water. We are looking for seasonal crew the 2023 season, which is also the celebration of 400 years since the founding of Gloucester, America’s oldest seaport.
Deckhands onboard Adventure are responsible for:
• safe and proper operation of the vessel during sailing evolutions;
• ongoing maintenance of the vessel;
• delivering educational curriculum;
• welcoming guests on board and proactively engaging with passengers;
• participating in dockside and community events.
As a deckhand, you must be willing to positively represent Adventure to the public, participate in all aspects of shipboard life (such as chores, sail prep, sailing, interfacing with the public, merchandise, maintenance, stowing gear, drills and training, etc). You will be living and working aboard the historic schooner Adventure with up to 9 other crew members and volunteers.
Deckhands may be assigned ancillary roles such as Purser, Bosun, and Educational Liaison based on skills and interest. These roles will include additional pay and responsibilities.
All crew will report directly to the Captain and mate. Paid crew will work closely with volunteer crew and land-based staff members to create the overall Adventure experience.

Our Program
Adventure sails from June through September each year, doing a combination of public, educational charter and community sails. This summer we will be striving to offer free sails to local people from marginalized and underserved sectors of the community, as part of our belief that Adventure belongs to all of Gloucester and Cape Ann.

Kalmar Nyckel Foundation
The Kalmar Nyckel has a mission of education conducting short education daysails and tours for school field trips during our spring and fall seasons and a short period of time in the summer for summer camp visits. The ship also makes several short trips from Norfolk, VA to New England. The Kalmar Nyckel takes guests sailing on 2-3 hours sails in Delaware ports and other ports up and down the coast, ending with our favorite festival in Chestertown, MD.

The cook's responsibilities include cooking two to three meals a day for our volunteer and professional crew, provisioning the ship, and overseeing the cleanliness and hygiene of the galley. We have a 6 burner Garland stove, ample fridge and freezer space, an industrial coffee maker, an ice maker, and a washer/dryer on board.  Plus lots of head room, a private cabin, and the great staff and volunteers to work with.  1 week of paid vacation is part of the contract. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred
At least ten years of meaningful work experience nonprofit management; previous successful experience in an executive director or leadership position preferred.
Experience in development, including government and community relations.
Demonstrated ability to effectively handle a wide variety of roles including leadership, strategic planning, communications, finance, administration, data management and technology. The Bayshore Center intends to operate through a very small staff and the Executive Director will be responsible for management or direct implementation of all the organization’s functions.

Chief Mate

The Chief Mate is the ship’s executive officer and assists the captain in management of the ship’s operations.

This position is an opportunity for professional mariners in traditional sail to develop in a leadership position. We seek applicants who are passionate about traditional sail, the continuance of tall ship seamanship and sail training. The Chief Mate works with the captain to manage programs and the safe operation of the vessel. The Chief Mate oversees training of the ship’s crew and volunteers. As executive officer, the Chief Mate attends to operational details of the vessel to ensure the seaworthiness of the ship and crew. The Chief Mate manages the vessels rigging, departments, daily schedule, safety systems, personnel, and maintenance. Applicants must have traditional sail experience. Applicants must have experience as a deck watch officer, rigging, and management of crew and vessel operations. Applicants should have previous experience on traditional sailing vessels and familiarity with engineering systems.

Requires at least 3 years traditional sail experience, including as a deck officer (unlicensed or with 100 ton Aux Sail). Opportunity for Relief Captain work if appropriately licensed.
