Qualitative Acoustic Bat Biologist

(WEST), a dynamic environmental and statistical consulting firm with offices across the United States and Canada, is looking for a full-time Consulting level bat biologist to conduct qualitative bat call analysis in the eastern and western United States and Canada. This position will require occasional overnight travel. Start date is flexible.

Job Summary:
The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability as a qualitative bat expert with experience completing
bat acoustic surveys, qualitatively identifying federally listed, under review, and candidate bat species such as Indiana bat, northern long-eared bat, tricolored bat, and little brown bat, AND/OR western species such as
western long-eared Myotis, fringed Myotis, Townsend’s big-eared bat, big free-tailed bat, and Mexican free-tailed bat. Experience with acoustic analysis software (i.e. Kaleidoscope, Analook, AnaBat Insight, SonoBat).
Additionally, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing and completing bat and other wildlife related studies, including presence/probable absence surveys for threatened and endangered bats, NABat monitoring surveys, WEG compliant acoustic activity surveys, pre-construction and post-construction avian and bat surveys at wind energy projects, habitat assessments for rare species, and preparing/reviewing technical reports of survey results.

Responsibilities include:
• Qualitative review and labeling of eastern and western bats.
• Review acoustic data collected across multiple projects and technicians to determine functionality and help troubleshoot issues with technicians in the field.
• Review bat calls in bat acoustic analysis software (e.g., Kaleidoscope, Analook, AnaBat Insight, SonoBat).
• Assist in proposal writing and report writing for bat specific studies.

Associate U.S Fish & Wildlife Service Permitted Bat Biologist

(WEST), a dynamic environmental and statistical consulting firm with offices across the United States and Canada, is looking for a full-time Associate U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permitted bat biologist. The bat biologist would be responsible for conducting presence/probable absence surveys (acoustic and mist-net) along with other bat surveys.

Job Summary:
The successful candidate will have experience completing bat presence/probable absence surveys (acoustic and mist-net) and hold a USFWS recovery permit or be eligible to obtain one. Other duties include conducting habitat assessments for listed bat species, writing technical reports, managing field projects and field staff, preparing scopes/budgets for proposed projects, working with renewable energy developers and state and federal agencies, completing/managing pre- and post-construction avian and bat surveys at energy projects, and other field work and research as needed.

Responsibilities include:
• Independently conduct mist-net surveys following USFWS guidelines, including site selection, determining specific net locations, radio tag attachment, telemetry, and roost emergence counts.
• Be familiar with the USFWS Range-wide Indiana bat and Northern long-eared Bat Survey Guidelines.
• Deploy common bat acoustic detector models.
• Review acoustic data collected across multiple projects to determine functionality and help troubleshoot issues with technicians in the field.
• Work independently and on a two-person team. Must be able to communicate and coordinate effectively with WEST supervisors that may be off-site, including adhering to schedules and providing daily summaries of survey efforts.
• Assist in proposal writing and report writing for bat-specific studies.

Postdoctoral Researcher - Cornell University

The project is in support of the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat), collaborating with partners from the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The project builds on a strong foundation of mobile acoustic work conducted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), and other state agency partners, and will involve collection and analysis of mobile acoustic survey data from monitoring partners in the northeastern United States. The candidate will help meet partner needs by producing bat species status and trend reports, data visualizations, and data dashboards that readily communicate analytical results to a broad audience.
