Arboriculture / Urban Forestry Intern
West Laurel Hill Cemetery
The Urban Forestry / Arboriculture Intern will work closely with the Arboretum Manager on projects related to tree care and inventory and assessment of the woody plant collection. The main duties of the Urban Forestry intern will be tree and shrub pruning (ground only, no climbing), Plant Health Care treatments, Tree Risk Assessment, and tree inventory.
The Urban Forestry / Arboriculture intern will also assist the Arboretum Manager and Horticulturist in various other aspects of horticulture, and landscape maintenance at West Laurel Hill Cemetery and Laurel Hill Cemetery, including: tree and shrub planting and removal; mulching, weeding and maintaining garden areas; watering new plantings, and helping to maintain the green burial area / native plant meadow. The Urban Forestry / Arboriculture Intern will also complete an independent project guided by the Arboretum Manager related to the management of the Living Collection and/or tree care.
Requirements include the ability to work independently and as part of a team outdoors in various weather conditions, the ability to lift 50 pounds, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn all aspects of tree care, living collection inventory, and landscape management. A Bachelor’s degree in Arboriculture, Horticulture, Environmental Studies, or a related field, and/or equivalent work experience is preferred. The Urban Forestry / Arboriculture Internship is a full-time, seasonal position with a commitment of 40 hours per week from June 2nd to August 31st. This position is paid at $15 / hr.

In addition, the Community Tree Specialist helps establish Tree Pittsburgh as the regional leader where municipalities, institutions,
organizations, and individuals involved in urban/community forestry matters can come for information, ideas, and activities that will
promote improved tree health care and management practices and that enhance the beauty and livability of our communities. The
Community Tree Specialist will also serve as a crew leader for the new Urban Forestry Technician program, a job training program
slated for March-June.
