General Opportunities
Cohere
Who are we?
We’re a small, diverse team working at the cutting edge of machine learning. At Cohere, our mission is to build machines that understand the world and to make them safely accessible to all. Language is at the crux of this, but it can be difficult and expensive to parse the syntax, semantics, and context that all work together to give words meaning. The Cohere platform provides access to Large Language Models through its APIs that read billions of web pages and learn to understand the meaning, sentiment, and intent of the words we use in a richness never seen before.

We recently raised our Series B, signed a multi-year partnership with Google Cloud, and we are focused on bringing our technology to market. We will partner with customers so they can build natural language understanding and generation into their products with just a few lines of code.

We’re ambitious — we believe our technology will fundamentally transform how industries interact with natural language. And we have the technical chops to back it up - Cohere’s CEO, Aidan Gomez, is a co-author of the groundbreaking paper “Attention is all you need”, (over 23k citations) and was previously part of Google Brain. Our entire technical team is world-class.

We are focused on creating a diverse and inclusive work environment so that all of our team members can thrive. We welcome kind and brilliant people to our team, from wherever they come.

Fully sponsored MSc/PhD
University of Alberta
CONTACT: doublepower.mou@gmail.com (Please send your CV and mention ACL’22)

POSITIONS: MSc (thesis), PhD
* Admission starts in Oct 2022; program starts in Sept 2023.
* Department requirements: https://www.ualberta.ca/computing-science/graduate-studies/programs-and-admissions/index.html

All positions are fully funded (at least covering tuition fees and living expenses).

SELECTED RESEARCH:

* Neuro-symbolic reasoning. In this project, we combine different schools of AI, namely, symbolism and connectionism. Generally, we design a neural system with symbolic structures for a text understanding task, and apply reinforcement learning or its relaxation to perform weakly supervised reasoning in the downstream task. Our framework has been successfully applied to various tasks, including SQL command reasoning, syntactic structure reasoning, and logical reasoning.

* Unsupervised text generation. We define a text generation task by heuristic scoring functions, and apply discrete search (e.g., simulated annealing with local editing) to maximize the score. Further, we propose to train a machine learning from search results to smooth out search noise and improve inference efficiency. This framework has been applied to as paraphrase generation, summarization, text simplification, style-transfer generation, etc.

* Non-autoregressive generation. Non-autoregressive (NAR) models generate words in parallel and thus are much faster than AR models during inference. In the literature NAR is believed to be worse than AR models in output quality, but we observe NAR provides unique opportunities for length-control text generation, as it is possible to design dynamic programming algorithms based on NAR’s predicted local probabilities. Based on this idea, we have designed both word-level length control (check out our ACL’22 paper) and character-level length control (ongoing) for text generation.

Research Engineer
NICT (National Institute of Information and Communications Technology)
There are 2 open positions for research engineers at NICT, Japan. Check the link for more information.

Description:

One of the most important targets of machine translation is the texts with structure. The translation of Web pages, for example, is valuable for practical use. We can view them as texts with their structure clearly indicated by HTML tags. The problem is to translate the documents accurately while keeping their original structure. The result of OCR recognition of a document can be viewed as text with a structure called layout. However, OCR results may contain errors. In addition, the style of translation changes depending on the part where the text belongs: heading, main text, or bullet point.

Reach out by email or chat for more information. The employment period is usually from joining date to the end of the fiscal year but this will be extended (depending on performance).

Sr. Applied Scientist
Amazon
The Amazon Search team owns the software that powers Search - a critical customer-focused feature of Amazon.com. Whenever you visit an Amazon site anywhere in the world, it's our technology that delivers you outstanding search results. Our services are used by millions of Amazon customers a day. We’re looking at every aspect of search, from query understanding to front-end UX, ranking and relevance, indexing and tiering and asking how we can make big step improvements by applying advanced Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques. Delivering highly quality Al labeling data at scale is a key contributor for new feature releases of the Search organization.
We focus on building multi-disciplinary team that is responsible for building and operating a scalable, world-class, multi-tenant, high-throughput, high-fidelity data labeling infrastructure. We want to explore new scientific approaches to deliver labels through a mixture of ML algorithms and human judges, automate quality evaluations and enhance label re-use.

As an Applied Scientist in this team, you will:
Design, build and deploy machine labeling solution and continuous improvements with active learning models.
Design, build effective and innovative ML solutions to ensure AI labeling quality.
Work with leading internal and external managed workforce and crowd labeling platforms across the world.
Work with internal customers across Amazon to understand how the data is used and apply this understanding to build the right models and solutions that address their AI labeling requirements.
Evaluate the proposed solutions via offline benchmark tests as well as online A/B tests in production.
Publish and present your work at internal and external scientific venues in the fields of ML/NLP/IR.
