The Research Scientist II – Infrared Remote Sensing Specialist position provides leadership and support for MTRI programs focused on the development and application of remote sensing and geospatial analysis to solve governmental and societal needs through sponsored research. Knowledge of remote sensing theory, in particular infrared sensing (IR), and application for environmental science or transportation research is required. The applicant will be expected to develop, select, and lead remote sensing research projects that apply their knowledge of IR sensing. The ability to improve the processing and analysis of IR remote sensing data through custom coding and analysis will be important. Examples of current research areas include wildland and prescribed fire mapping and effects assessment, Great Lakes aquatic sensing, invasive species mapping, wetlands assessment, transportation infrastructure assessment, wildland fire danger and emissions mapping, cloud-based and distributed computing, user-friendly app development, improved geotemporal visualization of complex data and patterns, extending UAV-enabling sensing, and Arctic landscape change. Join our growing Research and Modeling department as a member of our wildland fire hazard modeling team. Use your knowledge of wildland fire and data science to develop stochastic models of wildland fire ignition probability, fire behavior / spread, and penetration into the wildland-urban interface. As a member of this team, you will incorporate the most recent data and scientific research into our existing models as well as expand our wildfire modeling domain into new regions.
About the Day to Day Responsibilities of the Role
· Perform validation analyses of implemented wildfire model solutions with observed data.
· Analyze wildfire model results and perform sensitivity analysis to answer client questions regarding their wildfire risk
· Integrate new climatological, wildfire activity, and wildfire behavior data into existing models and explain changes seen in modeled results.
· Keep abreast of current wildland fire research and look for ways to integrate this research into existing and new wildfire models
· Present AIR wildfire models to clients and at meetings. Prepare technical and nontechnical documents on models.
QUALIFICATIONS
About You and How You Can Excel in This Role
•Ability to gather, understand, and critically analyze information from all relevant sources, such as historical fire/weather/climate data, scientific papers, government reports, insurance data, etc.
• Strong statistical background, including familiarity with statistical packages such as R.
• Solid technical programming skills gained through practical experience using a high level language (e.g., C++, C#, Python).
• Familiarity and comfort with manipulating large data sets. SQL experience a plus.
• Experience with GIS software (ArcGIS) a plus.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• 2+ years professional experience in a technical environment.
• M.S. or Ph.D. degree in fire science, environmental science, engineering

As a Remote Sensing Scientist, one utilizes numerous Geographic Information System software, scripting techniques, statistics, data mining, and/or modeling methodology to produce, manipulate, analyze, and interpret geospatial datasets that contribute to the science focus area.
Education:
Minimum B.S. (M.S preferred) in Earth Science field with emphasis in remote sensing, GIS, statistics, scripting, or similar field
Experience:
At least 5 years of directly related professional experience (willing to consider differing combinations of education/experience)
Responsibilities:
Applies an earth science background in project research and development activities
Performs GIS/remote sensing data collection, management, processing, and analysis using various software packages
Incorporates scripting/automation efficiencies into data processing work flows and ensure data quality at all stages
Utilizes statistical software, such as R and Excel, to validate, compare, and study data results
Contributes to and/or leads the writing, editing, and review of publications and presentations including the development of high-quality graphics
Develops metadata for geospatial datasets
Requirements:
Fundamental understanding of remote sensing science and the characteristics of geospatial data
Experience working with various GIS software applications
Understanding of computer modeling techniques (decision tree and random forest)
Knowledge of statistical-based data analysis and validation techniques
