This project will begin in May 2025 and will involve multiple phases of biological work, including protocol surveys, relocation, monitoring, and site restoration.

While an Approved Biologist is not required for this role, candidates must have completed desert tortoise training and possess experience conducting desert tortoise surveys and monitoring in compliance with standard protocols.

Fieldwork will be conducted across multiple tasks, including:
• Desert tortoise protocol surveys and relocation, requiring experienced biologists to conduct surveys, assess habitat, and relocate individuals as needed. This phase will take place over approximately 2.5 weeks in May 2025.
• Biological monitoring during desert tortoise fence installation, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and minimizing impacts to wildlife during a three-week period from May to June 2025.
• Biological monitoring during excavation activities, providing oversight during remedial actions over the course of nine weeks from May through July 2025.
• Biological monitoring during disposal and site restoration, ensuring environmental protections remain in place during final project phases, lasting approximately nine weeks from August through October 2025.

This is a field-based role requiring long hours in challenging desert conditions, with a schedule of 10-hour days, five days per week during active monitoring phases. Competitive compensation will be provided based on experience.

Location Details/Description: Georgetown, CA - Eldorado National Forest

Position Overview:
The Wildlife Technician will support the wildlife program by conducting California spotted owl, and northern goshawk surveys, with potential work with amphibian surveys.
Field work will vary from nighttime, early morning, and daytime depending on surveys.
March-June will primarily focus on night work for owl surveys. Starting in June there will be some alternating between night and day work (weekly) to start goshawk surveys.
Additional surveys may include bat acoustic monitoring, black-backed woodpecker, and bald eagles.
The member must be prepared to hike (10+ miles) steep, arduous terrain in adverse weather conditions for long periods of each day.
The member will be responsible for completing surveys to protocol and providing accurate and timely documentation.
This position will require close coordination with the project leader, but most duties will be performed independently, which at times will require the member to take initiative and problem solve to determine priorities.
As needed, a percentage of the technician's time may be scheduled to assist in other program areas (Wildlife, Botany, and Archeology), in order to accomplish high priority project needs and provide cross-training opportunities.
Experience in other program areas is not required but a willingness to work across programs and learn is essential.

Position Description:
This position is located within the Branch of Natural Resource Management (NRM) with the main goal of providing support for managing, monitoring, and synthesizing natural resource data at John Muir National Historic Site (JOMU) in Martinez, CA. The internship works closely with park staff and is roughly 90% field-based with a focus on non-native invasive plant management (60%) and biological monitoring (40%). Work schedule will be either Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday, 8am - 2pm (due to warmer weather, the start time will switch to 7am in April). Primary duties for this job include:

-Managing non-native invasive plants using manual techniques (weed trimmers, hand-pulling) and assisting with herbicide application.
-Identifying, monitoring, and mapping target species and populations of native and invasive plant species using GPS units.
-Collecting data from various plant species for the California Phenology Project.
-Serving as a biological monitor during mowing operations.
-Assisting biologists with various biological monitoring projects including reptile, small mammal, bird, and pollinator surveys, including installation of trap-lines, data collection, and data input.
-Assisting with photo-point, wildlife camera, and water quality monitoring.
-Providing NRM support through maintaining and cleaning equipment, assisting with outreach events, attending relevant meetings, and participating in training.

SWCA is expanding our natural resources team and seeking Assistant/Staff Biologist candidates for upcoming environmental projects involving a range of office and field duties ... ;throughout California. Candidates located in the  San Francisco Bay area are encouraged to apply to support the volume of infrastructure projects in those areas. Work hours may vary seasonally, and depending on project needs and your skills. On-call staff are requested for work as it becomes available and are free to accept or refuse the work based on their schedule. As our Natural Resources team continues to grow, additional opportunities for advancement and/or transition to a regular, full-time position will be available. 

It is anticipated that travel, including overnight stays, will be required for this position. This position may at times also require long or abnormal work hours (early start times, night shifts, etc.). Fieldwork will include travel throughout California. Experience throughout the state is not required as multiple on-calls will be hired to cover a wide range of geographies including the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento Valley, North Bay and Northern California Coast.
