Postdoctoral Research Fellow in assistance dogs for detecting epileptic seizure onset
Dublin City University
We know that wearable accelerometers on our wrists or in our pockets can count our steps, recognise our activities and computer our energy expenditure. Wearable accelerometers have recently been used on the collars of trained dogs to automatically classify the dog's activities into spinning or rollovers. These are exactly the kinds of signalling behaviour used by assistance dogs when they detect something and want to warn their owners. The accuracy of the automatic detection is already quite good and reliable.

This project combines sensors worn by assistance dogs to automatically detect and notify their signalling behaviours to their human charges, in particular to the onset of an epileptic seizure, in real time. The idea brings together patient needs for those with epilepsy, animal behaviour of assistance dogs, and machine learning and data analytics for automatic detection of dog behaviour. For this work, the project has clinical expertise in epilepsy, practical expertise and access from a charity which breeds and trains assistance dogs, and the support of Epilepsy Ireland.

The project has an opportunity for a 2-year MCSA postdoctoral researcher under the NeuroInsight MCSA Fellowship program. The project brings together a broad spread of research areas thus it is not necessary that a successful applicant will have expertise in all of these areas.

Funded PhD Position in Self-supervised Learning from Multi-modal Data
University of Birmingham
We are looking for a PhD student working on self-supervised machine learning and learning from multi-modal data. This project aims to study and explore the potential of learning general transferable representations from multi-modal data in a self-supervised manner. The multi-modal data here means data from multiple sensors. For example, potential data modalities could be image, video, audio, text, 3D depth, multi-view, geographical information and other metadata. The target general transferable representations indicate the knowledge learned by the deep model that can be well transferred to downstream tasks. For example, a model was pre-trained on a large-scale dataset for task A, and then applied to tasks B, C, etc. without requiring additional effort on data from tasks B and C. This is important as it can greatly alleviate the cost of building AI models. Multi-modal data is also beneficial for self-supervised representation learning as it provides more constraints and consistency among different modalities. The student is expected to start by working on public datasets available in the community. Deep learning models will be developed by the student to take multi-modal data as input and generate the high-quality representations as mentioned above. In a later stage, a new dataset would be constructed and novel algorithms will be developed upon that to answer the challenging questions within this topic and beyond.
