PostDoc Position on "Turning IR into a Predictive Science: From Evaluating to Forecasting Performance"
Department of Information Engineering, University of Padua
Predictability is a fundamental attribute of daily life: we expect familiar things to behave in familiar ways. In science, predictability has taken on more specific meanings; our understanding of a system, model, or method is validated by our ability to predict performance or outcomes, often in a quantified form. A particular challenge for the IR systems regarded here is that, ultimately, they create or affect a human experience.

We will focus on 5 problem areas:
1. Measures: We need a better understanding of the assumptions and user perceptions underlying different metrics, as a basis for judging about the differences between methods.
2. Performance analysis: Instead of regarding only overall performance figures, we should develop rigorous and systematic evaluation protocols focused on explaining performance differences.
3. Assumptions: The assumptions (and how much we depart from them) underlying our algorithms, evaluation methods, datasets, tasks, and measures should be identified and explicitly formulated.
4. Application features: The gap between test collections and real-world applications should be reduced. Most importantly, we need to determine the features of datasets, systems, contexts, tasks that affect the performance of a system.
5. Performance Models: We need to develop models of performance which describe how application features and assumptions affect the system performance in terms of the chosen measure, in order to leverage them for prediction of performance.

REQUIRED SKILLS
- Ph.D. in IR, RecSys or ML
- Knowledge of latest developments in experimental evaluation
- Knowledge of latest developments in ML for IR

Applied Scientist-Search
Amazon
Amazon is the 4th most popular site in the US (source: http://www.alexa.com/topsites/countries/US). Our product search engine, one of the most heavily used services in the world, indexes billions of products and serves hundreds of millions of customers world-wide. We are working on a new initiative to transform our search engine into a shopping engine that assists customers with their shopping missions. We’re looking at every aspect of search, from query understanding to front-end UX, ranking and relevance, indexing and tiering and asking how we can make big, step improvements by applying advanced Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques. This is a rare opportunity to develop cutting edge ML solutions and apply them to a search problem of this magnitude. Some exciting questions that we expect to answer over the next few years include:
• Can we deeply understand customer intent and personalize their search
experience even when they type broad queries such as “dress” or “wspresso machine”?
• Can we reduce the cost of serving customer queries on Amazon by two orders of magnitude using ML to predict n-grams and tuples that many
queries decompose into, apply expensive ranking functions offline to identify the most relevant products that match these terms, and index
these for efficient online retrieval? We expect this to lead to exciting research at the intersection of systems and ML.
• Can we deeply understand the catalog to surface products that offer the most value to a customer? The challenge here is that the definition
of value is subjective and personal, and therefore requires a deeper understanding of the customers intent as well as preferences.
•Can we increase the experimental velocity of Customer Experience (CX) experiments by two orders of magnitude? Achieving this will enable us to rapidly try various CX treatments, and contextualize the CX based on factors such as customer intent and device.

Research Engineer - Artificial Intelligence
Bloomberg
News and social media move financial markets. Bloomberg is one of the largest producers of news in the world and we ingest millions of news stories every day from over 70,000 external news feeds and social media such as Twitter. This data keeps our clients informed, and our team's insights help make sense of it for our customers.

Who are we? Bloomberg's Artificial Intelligence (AI) group: researchers and engineers who have a passion for solving complex problems. Our charter: to extract and identify relevant, meaningful, tradable, and actionable information (such as pricings, earnings, recommendations and major events) from data (including news, web, social media, and structured data) in real-time. Since our customers rely on this information to make swift financial decisions, we guarantee precision, accuracy, and latency numbers beyond most academic and industry standards. We aren't just building customer-facing products, as the infrastructure and algorithms we develop are themselves used across the company. We also publish papers, attend conferences, organize workshops, and contribute back to the larger data science community whenever we can (see https://www.techatbloomberg.com/nlp/ and https://bloomberg.com/company/d4gx/).

Who are you? A research scientist and engineer who wants to work in the areas of machine learning, natural language processing, information extraction, reinforcement learning, graphical models, recommender systems, and/or knowledge graphs. You want to join a close-knit group and make a big impact.
